The Importance of Learning a Foreign Language

Why Learn a Foreign Language?

The Importance of Language-Learning

Why should we learn a foreign language? After all, the whole world speaks English. Well, there's some truth in this argument, but only some. There are many reasons for learning a new language:

Personal Development

By learning a new language, you gain new horizons, but at the same time you reinforce your own identity, and therefore also your self-confidence. A foreign language can contribute to a stronger personality.

Cultural Reasons

It is a fundamental truth that cultures define themselves through languages. A foreign language gives you access to another culture. It gives you the ability to communicate and to exchange views with people all over the world that you would otherwise not have the chance to know.

Educational Reasons

Learning a foreign language opens up a whole new dimension. It has a positive effect on intellectual growth and it enriches and enhances mental development.
Learning a foreign language is especially effective at an early age. It greatly benefits reading and writing in one's own language; there's evidence that, like musical education, it contributes significantly to the development of individual intelligence.

Economic Reasons

In a globalized world characterized by international links and intercultural connections, linguistic skills are crucial for employment and career. The knowledge of foreign languages increases job opportunities in many careers where knowing another language is a real asset.

The Rosetta Stone Method Addresses All Four Key Areas of Language Learning

The Four Keys That Unlock The Door To Learning A New Language

If you are to be truly proficient in a language, you must be able to listen to and understand others who are speaking the language. You must be able to comfortably speak the language. You must be able to read the language, and finally, you must be able to write in the language.

The Rosetta Stone Language Program excels in developing all these skills as you work through their system of Dynamic Immersion™

First, the Rosetta Stone Foreign Language Learning program uses native speakers and everyday language to develop your listening comprehension skills an a natural and easy manner.

Second, you will improve our pronunciation by using dynamic speech recognition technology to compare your speech with a native speaker.

Third, by linking examples of the written language to real-life objects, ideas, and actions you will develop your reading skills.

And fourth, you will practice writing what you hear spoken in a series of exercises where the software checks your work and then lets you correct any mistakes you have made.

The Rosetta Stone Foreign Language Learning Software provides the key to unlock all four of these critical areas of language learning.

How the Rosetta Stone Method Works.

Learning Foreign Languages By Dynamic Immersion

Rosetta Stone's Dynamic Immersion method reconnects people to the language skills they used successfully to master their first language. With Rosetta Stone, you start from a position of strength-your own strength.

Learn a Foreign Language through Context
Rosetta Stone presents a carefully chosen selection of four images and asks you to select the image that matches the written text and the voices of native speakers. Building on the knowledge you've already gained and your intuitive grasp of the meaning of each picture, you make a choice. There's absolutely no translation or memorization to hold you back, so you start making progress immediately.

Immediate Reinforcement
The very second you complete a task, Rosetta Stone provides feedback. Speak a word and our unique voiceprint technology automatically rates your pronunciation. Connect an image with a phrase and you'll immediately learn if your choice was correct. Complete a set of exercises and you'll instantly know how well you did. With Rosetta Stone, you always know where you stand.

Systematic Sequence
Dynamic Immersion is a continuous process. The Rosetta Stone curriculum is carefully sequenced, gradually incorporating new words, phrases, and more complex grammar as it reinforces existing learning. Your understanding of your new language grows naturally.

Learn a Foreign Language and Broaden Your Horizons

I am a strong advocate of learning foreign languages. Allow me to explain my stand. I firmly believe that learning foreign languages is an activity that broadens the horizons of any man, woman or child. In fact, if truth be told, I would advocate learning foreign languages at a very young age. Not only do children learn faster than adults, they also retain the memory of the foreign language for much longer than adults do. Myself having never had the opportunity to indulge in learning foreign languages during my youth, I believe that it should be an opportunity offered to all.

Learning foreign languages has a whole host of advantages over mere linguistic skills. After all there is no point in being a polyglot if all you are going to do is to stick around in the same country. You need o go out and experience the world. But most of us are unable to indulge in such things because we have to work, or cannot afford the luxury or even that we scarcely have the time or inclination. But learning foreign languages allows you to experience the culture, the history and the language itself in more ways than you could imagine.

Imagine being able to read Voltaire's original works in French! Or for that matter, being able to read through Karl Marx's writings in his native tongue! How powerful the words would seem! How fascinating the language itself would be. Learning foreign languages even if from the safety and confines of your home would expose you to these great minds, even if there is no other way of knowing them and experiencing them from such closeness.

Another thing about learning foreign languages is the exposure to the working environment in today's global marketplace. Gone are the days when most of us worked in local offices with only our friends and neighbors as colleagues. Today, although we might work out an office in a particular location, we will in all probability be dealing with colleagues or business associated from half a dozen global locations. While the primary business language happens to be English, it surely wouldn't hurt to be able to converse in a foreign language that both the parties know. This is where learning foreign languages have direct business benefits.

All things considered, learning foreign languages is a sure shot way to growth and personal and professional development. While it might seem to be difficult to start with, once we are on, it will surely prove to be an interesting and stimulating exercise.

WARNING: Free is NOT always FREE!

Be sure to read the fine print!!

You will frequently see Google ads on this site that say you can get a copy of the Rosetta Stone Language-Learning software for free. As we all know, there is no such thing as a free lunch! Read the fine print and you will find that in order to get your copy you must exactly perform a set of responses to a series of advertising offers, which includes the requirement to purchase other products and or subscribe to paid services. Only after the advertisers have notified the company that you have satisfied all the requirements of their offers, will the software be sent to you. In effect you end up having to pay for it indirectly and get a lot of other junk in the process. In addition you provide your name and mailing address which will be made available to a number of mailing lists from which you will receive tons of junk mail. Click the link "Program Requirements" at the bottom of their page for the fine print details. My recommendation is don't fall for it!
