Always start your drawing by creating the largest dimensions first, then start to work on the overall general shape of the subject. Once you have the overall dimensions and body area of the subject defined then you will begin to work on the smaller shapes and the detail .

When drawing, you need to constantly compare your drawing to the subject matter you are copying and correct your drawing to accurately reflect the subject matter; with practice this gets easier to do over time.

This means that it is very important that you practice, practice, practice. In order to learn how to draw you need to do lots of drawing - devote an hour or two a day seven days a week to develop the skills of becoming a good artist. To become a very good or serious artist you must devote about 20 hours a week to drawing.

When beginners first start drawing they have a habit of adding to much details to their drawings. It's always best to include just the detail you need to which defines what you are drawing.

As your skills improve then you can increase the level of detail in your drawings and work towards a realistic look if that's what your working towards.

Get two pieces of paper one being a very lite tracing paper that is easy to see through.

On the solid white paper draw a square that is rougly the size of the image you are going to draw.

Sub-divide this square into 4-equal parts and sub-divide each of the 4 parts into 4 smaller parts.

Now place your tracing paper over the solid white paper and lightly trace out the outline, transferring the grid you just created on the solid white paper to the tracing paper.

Now place the tracing paper over the image you are going to draw (you can hold the tracing paper in place with masking tape).

Now your ready to start your drawing exercise!
You will focus your attention in the upper left square of the image that is bounded by the first square.

On the solid white paper you will begin to lightly draw in the upper left square what is bounded in the upper left square of the tracing paper (take your time examine the square before you begin to draw, gage where the lines begin and end within the square).

It is imperatve that you do not focus on details at this point, but just on the general large features of the image.

Once you have finished with one square you will move on to the next square and the next square after that until the entire image has been copied to the solid white paper.

At this point you should have something that closely resembles the original image, if you took your time and gaged the lines fairly accurately. If not you can start fresh with a new sheet of paper.

Remember as with all things but particularly with art and music practice, practice, practice makes perfect.
Once the general outline looks good you will then begin to add some detail to the entire drawing.

If everything looks ok then yo will add more details and continue till it is time to add shadows for the finishing touches.

1 - 2H pencil or regular soft lead pencil to start with
1 - soap eraser
tracing paper
white drawing paper or white typing paper

You can use this approach for Figure Drawing, Cartoon Drawing, Animal Drawing... Just rember you need to devote time, several times a week lets say about half hour to start width in order to see some decent results and to gradually move yourself off of the grids
(The grid structure is there to help build your eye-hand coordination).
