Learn and master guitar
6 really simple steps to get started learning guitar
I can remember like yesterday that feeling of excitement when I made up my mind to discover the wonderful power of the guitar. I can also remember that nervous feeling that I felt at the pit of my stomach, as I had a lot of friends who were very good, and at the time what felt like light years ahead of me. Looking back, I laugh at the doubt that I felt when I first started, because without bragging, in all honest I flew by them within less than a year. I made a lot of mistakes along the way though, and I would like to use these as an example and SHOW you the very first things that you should be learning.
Learn and master guitar because it will open up the musical doors for you, especially if you want to go on to learning other instruments. Its kind of like a code, once you learn a little bit about music, it becomes easier to see the whole picture and apply its wonderful gifts unto other instruments. Had I not made this decision, I wouldn't be able to play every instrument in my own songs now, but I'm starting to ramble - so let's get started with those awesome tips to
learn and master guitar.
1. Watch a video on tuning a guitar to get started.
Then look for a digital guitar tuner for either acoustic or electric (whichever guitar you have). Don't be afraid to ask some one at an instrument store or guitar store which one you will need, and don't be afraid to bargain with them either ;)
2. Learn to read guitar tab
Tab what?? guitar tab is a for of guitar sheet music that uses numbers, simple abbreviations and symbols like / ^ and ~~~ to represent notes and accents for those notes. It might sound to you like you will have to learn a completely new language, but in fact on average any beginning student can understand at least 75% of all tab in less than ten minutes, and this will put yo on the right path to learn and master guitar.
3. Learn these 3 basic chords and then expand
Learn the 3 major chords of G, C, and D. These are important because you can arrange them in any order that you like and they will sound amazing. In fact they are the most common chords in music. You can find info on how to read chord charts in a book, online, or you can find the tab versions. From here add 3 new chords at a time to your memory - take your time with it. 3 chords at a time becomes quite a few very quickly and then start playing around with them to see what sounds good together.
4. Develop your strumming.
Strumming is simply what you do to make the string vibrate and sound chords. You can either use your fingers of your strumming hand, or use a guitar pick (I suggest a medium thickness pick for beginners).
Strum down, then up, then down, then up. This is alternate strumming. Play slowly so that you develop good strumming habits with your chord changes. Now, try mixing it up like down, down, up, etc. This will help you develop interesting rhythms.
5. Using notes
Don't be afraid to mess around with a random note. This is a little trickier, but apply the strumming idea to the note. Remember that when you do this you are only picking ONE string. As a secret, alternate picking (down, up, down, up) is one way to develop your guitar speed if you want to learn fast solos - though its not the only method, and you'll learn about those in the future I'm sure. Again, with this method you will truly learn and master guitar.
6. Learn the major scale
I don't suggest doing this right away, but after some time, investigate the major scale. This scale once you have it memorized can arm you with enough information to actually solo over many chord progressions, and in the future it will help you to unlock all the scales and modes, and help you find chords and soloing ideas.
