The Michelle Thomas CD do sound like a great way to start. Being able to listen (and then imitate) seems important to me. I know that the different sentence structure is always a challenge. I found learning a bit of Spanish and Italian a less intimidating, thanks to so many similar words, but French, I learned only a handful of phrases and words unfortunately.

I have used Michelle Thomas and found it really good, to the point I nearly wore the CD's out. I think he is the best for someone wanting to start on learning conversational French as a beginner.
