Learning Luganda the Language of Uganda

Uganda is located in east central Africa, situated north and northwest of Lake Victoria. It is a landlocked country bordered by Sudan on the North Kenya on the east, Tanzania on the South, Rwanda on the southwest and Zaire on the northwest.

The greater part of Uganda consists of a plateau about 4,000 ft in height. Along the western border of the Ruwenzori Mountains reaching heights of over 16,000 ft, while on the eastern frontier Mount Elgon rises to 14,178 ft. By contrast, the Western Rift Valley, which runs from north to south through the western half of the country, is as low as 3,000 ft on the floor of Lake Edward and Lake George and 2,000 ft on the flow of LakeAlbert. The White Nile River has its source in Lake Victoria.

The colonial boundaries created by Britain to delimit Uganda grouped together a wide range of ethnic groups with different political systems and cultures. These differences prevented the establishment of a working political community after independence was achieved in 1962. The dictatorial regime in 1971 to 1979 was responsible for the deaths of some 300,000 opponents, guerrilla war and human rights abuses in 1980 to 1985 claimed at least another 100,000 lives. The rule of Yoweri Museveni since 1986 has brought relative stability and economic growth to Uganda. During the 1990s, the government promulgated non party presidential and legislative elections.

Uganda is subject to armed fighting among hostile ethnic groups, rebels, armed gangs, militias and various government forces that extend across its borders.

Agriculture is the most important sector of the economy, employing over 80 percent of the work force. Coffee accounts for the bulk of export revenues. The country has substantial natural resources, including fertile soils, regular rainfall, and sizable mineral deposits of copper and cobalt.

English official national language, taught in grade schools, used in courts of law and by most newspapers and some radio broadcasts. Ganda or Luganda most widely used of the Niger Congo languages preferred for native language publications in the capital and may be taught in school.

The government has stated that recruitment below the age of eighteen could occur with proper consent. However no person under the apparent age of thirteen years shall be enrolled in the armed forces. Eighteen is the age of age for compulsory and voluntary military duty.

Mortality due to AIDS can result in lower life expectancy, higher infant mortality and death rates, lower population and growth rates and changes in the distribution of population by age and sex than would otherwise be expected

The climate is tropical one season and generally rainy the other.
