Learning The Guitar

For some people, the idea of learning the guitar is scary one. It just looks like there is so much to learn, that you'd never have time to learn it all. Technique, theory, chords, scales, it's a lot to take in and, sadly, some people are put off altogether by what they see as an insurmountable task. In fact, it's nowhere near as hard to learn to play the guitar as many people seem to think, as long as you have the right help. In this article I'd like to talk about the more common issues people may have when they decide to start learning the guitar, and make you see that it's not as hard as you might first think.

There are countless reasons why people choose to learn the guitar. For some people, it is a career in music they're after. Some people want compose their own music and record their own records. Sometimes, people just want to be able to jam along to their favourite songs. It doesn't matter what reasons you have though, I can guarantee that you will find the experience of leaning the guitar a challenging, enjoyable, and rewarding one.

Before you start leaning the guitar, you'll first have to decide which type of guitar you want to play: acoustic or electric. Your decision will be mostly based on what sort of music you want to play, although there are no strict rules. Many people find it easer to start on an electric guitar, as they tend to be less difficult to play, particularly for beginners.

The next thing to decide on, after you chosen a guitar, is whether you want to take lessons from a teacher, or try and go it alone, using books and videos for guidance. It will cost money to hire a private teacher, but the benefits, like having someone guide you through every stage of learning, more than justify the cost. Teaching yourself is cheaper, and can be great if you can stay disciplines, but it easy to develop bad habits, and incorrect playing techniques when learning this way.

Regardless of whether you chose to take lessons or go it alone, you'll probably start by learning how to play chords.Guitar music is often nothing more than simply strumming chords. Once you get the hang of changing chords, and strumming in time, you'll be amazed how quickly you can learn new songs, and how fantastic you sound.

There is only really one way to become a great guitar play, and that is practice. But that's not as simple as it sounds. Incorrect practice an actually do more harm than good, whereas practicing correctly will dramatically reduce the time it takes to become good. You should always aim to play and practise things as cleanly and as accurately as possible. Take care to play each note or chord evenly, and in time. You should always us a metronome for this.

That concludes this article. I hope you've found it informative, and maybe it's inspired you to get practising.
