The Joy Of Learning To Play Guitar
Once you have bought a guitar it stays with you. Even if you keep it under the bed, it is out of sight but still lurking on the edge of your awareness, reminding you of a decision you made once. Have you really made the decision to begin learning to play guitar? Do you know what is involved? Of course you don't. Most major decisions are made because we do not know what we are getting ourselves into. Buying a house, going on a ski weekend, offering to help a friend move house - all these kinds of moves lead to that moment where we ask the sky, "How did I get here?" For many people deciding that the guitar is their "thing" is closely followed by the revelation that chord practice and guitar tuning are the work of the devil. But why are we dwelling on all this negative stuff? Well, the fact is when we learn the guitar we need to get over a "hump". You don't go straight from imagining yourself palying "Smoke On The Water" to actually doing it unless you plan on being an air guitarist. There are many ways online to learn to play guitar, some involve buying packages of videos and books which will be delivered to your house. Some give the less expensive option of downloading the videos and instructions. For the most part these guitar teaching methods are excellent. If you decide any course is not for you they should have a money back guarantee. The best quality and the most popular of these packaged guitar learning courses is Jamorama Another way to go is an online course where you can interact with your teacher and ask questions by email or on a forum. This is by far a better way to go because it can't be easily forgotten about like a course that consists of physical goods or computer files. Jamplay is a membership site dedicated to people learning to play guitar. You can start with basic beginner lessons or advanced genre lessons. You can learn chords, how to read tablature, lead guitar, strumming patterns, fingerpicking, songs, scales, modes, barre chords, theory and song composition. Plus there is new stuff being added all the time. Take a look at their free sample lessons.

Things you need for learning to play guitar
Okay, we have mentioned buying a guitar, so no need to go into too much detail. I will assume you know whether you want to play an acoustic or electric guitar. You can buy guitars online, but go to a music store and try some out first so you have some idea of what you are getting when you order that bargain on ebay.
You need to be able to tune your guitar. You can download free tuners to keep on your computer or you can use an online tuner like the one at Learn How To Play A Guitar For Free. These are fine if you are going to be near your computer all the time, but if not you need to buy a physical piece of equipment for tuning guitars. An electronic tuner is the best choice, because, like some online tuners, you have a visual guide to help you if you do not trust your ear.
You will also need a metronome. For instructions on getting yourself one, read the above paragraph again, only read "metronome" where it says "tuner".
The other thing about metronomes is they can cause alot of stress if you get too fixated on playing in time. Of course you need to play correctly, but your gutiar palying needs to be fluid, working with the natural flow of your muscles, not against it. So if you do not have the benefit of a teacher to help you, use the metronome sparingly or hardly at all when you are first learning guitar. Your body will be your friend if you follow this advice.

Free guitar software
For many people it could take sixty years, but Advanced FretPro is the best fretboard training program in the world and also has a massive chord and scale library showing exactly how to play chords and scales on a real guitar neck instead of from a chord or scale diagram.
Knowing the guitar fretboard inside out will open up a new musical world to you. You will immediately know where to find chords anywhere on the neck as well as enabling you to develop improvisation skills. Plus you'll be able to "jam" with other musicians.
Understanding what notes you are playing will enable you to deepen your musical understanding and give you a huge shortcut on your guitar skills.
Metronome Software
It uses a real sample of a metronome ticking. It's totally configurable and has more features than many of the metronomes that are only available by paying.
If you use a metronome when practising your scales and licks, it will help you play along with other musicians and practice keeping good time. If you are playing a bit of rock, blues or jazz, then we highly recommend the downloadable drum loop software which can get you jamming along with a drummer who never gets tired, keeps great time and can change styles at the click of a mouse.
Guitar Chords eBook
Phillip J Falcoline put together a fantastic document with hundreds of guitar chord diagrams and made it freely available.
How To Read Guitar Tab Guide
Use this definitive guide to learn exactly how to read GUITAR TAB (also called guitar tablature).
The really good news is your mousing finger won't get overtaxed downloading all this stuff because all four links are in the Free Downloads section here at Tab Guitar Lessons
