Kay GaleFollowing a dark period of my life, when I lost my health and career, I suffered a subsequent breakdown.

Art saved me!

I needed a diversion and therapy. A dear friend, who is a potter, suggested a beginners art class, intriguingly called "Learning to see again".
The teacher, Jan, was magical and within a lesson I was hooked.

That was 12 years ago. I still attend a workshop with the mystical Jan, who has encouraged me to develop my own style.

I adore colours, finding great healing powers within them. I paint using acrylics. I prefer abstract and impressionistic form.

Most of my work has been pure self-therapy and healing, but I have recently been persuaded to share with others, which has been exciting.

I was told this modern parable when I was retired early from my beloved nursing/midwifery due to ill health:

'Life is rarely what you expect it to be'

Imagine you are going on a holiday to Italy. You are excited! You pore over the guidebooks -so much to see.
You practice some Italian phrases and fantasise about the food.
The big day arrives and you board the plane with all the other happy travellers.
An uneventful flight and the plane touches down.
Bing Bong "Ladies and Gentlemen, there has been a slight change of plan, we've been diverted to Holland. Have a good trip."
At first you feel confused and angry. This isn't what we planned for! We want the Va Va Voom, la dolce vita of Italy.
Holland is sedate and quiet. Then you see the beautiful flowers and the handsome windmills.
The people are gentle and friendly.
You miss the bright lights and the excited Italians.
You'll always hanker after Italy, the place of your dreams but Holland isn't so bad.

This story illustrates how life is never as we predict and to survive you must enjoy the positive aspects of wherever you land.

Over the years I realise that learning to see this beautiful world again has enriched as well as saved my life.
