Facts about the Twi Language

Twi (pronounced 'chwee') is a language spoken in Ghana by about 6 million people. It is a dialect of the Akan language, which in turn belongs to the Kwa language family.

There are many divisions of the Twi languages, but they are all mutually intelligible. The Akan people are noted for their decorative stools and ornaments, and their Kente cloth, which has become a sign of not just Ghanaian but African pride.

One of the greatest challenges in learning any language is finding learning resources to adequately meet the various learning styles and needs people have.

For African languages, the lack of sufficient resources is particularly noteworthy. This is particularly true for Twi language or Ashanti Twi spoken in Ghana. There are however several resources available that should be considered by anyone interested in learning the Twi language.

Our Squidoo lens includes a number of Twi learning resources, recommended learning tools, videos, rss feeds, and more. So if you are interested in learning Twi check out the resources below.

A series of language learning courses, tested by users and improved over a number of years, are now available for the everyday person. Developed for use by government institutions, these courses cover just about every language out there, including the interesting Ghanan language of Twi.

The Foreign Service Institute's Basic Course in Twi offers introductory through intermediate instruction in the language, helping English speakers develop a practical knowlege of this language. If you've ever want to be proficient in Twi, now is the time to learn.

The Basic Course for Twi is designed as a "survival" type of language course. It's build to help you put together the most important language skills, so that you'll be able to handle common situations for visitors to Ghana. You'll be able to exchange greetings, navigate on foot, use the phone, eat in a restaurant, have a social conversation, cope with emergencies and find housing.

The units include learning activities, such as dialogues and cultural information, language drills and exercises, extra vocabulary you might need, and notes on the language itself. Since Twi is a tonal language, the course focuses heavily on the correct tones and the practice you'll need to pronounce it correctly.

The course comes on a CD-ROM, and is mostly focused on guided imitation. Eventually, you should be able to speak the language easily, accurately and automatically. The methods used, including memorization, guided imitation and sentence manipulation should help you assimilate the basic patterns and forms of the language quickly and without problems.

Soon, you'll be able to speak Twi in all the most important everyday situations. Of course, the learning methods alone can't do it all. It's important to find ways to use the language in your life, too. Use your language as much as you can to help master it and retain the information.

While native Twi speakers can be hard to find in the US, you may know someone from Ghana, or you may be able to find videos, audio recordings, and newspapers online that can help you integrate the language into your understanding. Speech and grammar are very important, and each unit will include a section on vocabulary and grammar, as well as basic sentences to use, classroom expressions, and sentences to teach language structure. You'll learn useful words and receive information on grammar, too. All in all, this is a very useful and easy way to teach yourself Twi!
