The violin itself will set you back anywhere from $150 to well over $1000. It really depends on the quality you're looking for. If you're just starting out, definitely consider an entry-level model and then move up once you've gotten better.

Let me tell you something. I didn't know how to read sheet music to save my life before learning violin online. In fact, I'm still no expert. I do, however, know how to play music from memory now and am able to read sheet music at a basic level.

The violin is not like the guitar in the sense that you DO need to have some basic understanding of sheet music to be able to play. A lot of people can play by ear but they will still know how to read music.

The good thing about learning violin online is that it lends itself well to learning how to read music at the same time. It's like having your own private instructor (but you can pause him and rewind him whenever you like).

Don't be intimidated by the thought of reading sheet music. It will make you a better player in a shorter time.
