Learning can be fun!

Learning and studying doesn't have to be dry and boring. There are many ways to brighten up a lesson or concept for students. Creating what could be uninteresting material into something they want to learn about encourages them to work harder at the subject and retain the information longer. One of my favorite things to do with my students is to play games! I have created many file folder games, board games, card games and more over the years which I will share with you, but lately I've also been searching and finding some really cool online games. Some are pre-made and others may be created with your own specific objectives. I love when students come in and ask me, "Can we play that game again today?" I hope your students will enjoy some of these websites and game ideas, too. Please share some of your favorite learning games, ideas, and links below! I'm sure many students will benefit from them!

There will be so much more to come on this page!! :D

Spelling Learning, Review, and Testing Games

We enjoy the activities at this great site to practice our spelling and vocabulary! You have to register to use the site, but all the basic activities are free. After entering your personalized spelling list and number you want, students can press "Teach Me" which says each word, spells it to them, and reads the word in a sentences. Another option is to play a game for spelling practice such as: Match It, Alphabetize, Hang Mouse, Word Search, Unscramble, Audio Word Match, Which Word, Sentence Unscramble, and Crossword. Al of the games may be played online, and several may be printed out as a worksheet. The lists may be printed out as a chart / study sheet, or as a handwriting worksheet in your choice of writing style and size. A "Test Me" option is also linked to your lists to use as a pre-test or final test of the list. You may access many premade lists to use or make your own. Additional resources are lists on abbreviations, compound words, contractions, Dolch words, geography lists, homophones and homonyms, literature based word lists, phonics & sight word spelling lists, popular word lists, possessive nouns, sample lists, sequential spelling program, and sound alike words. Spelling and teaching suggestions are found here also.

Have fun practicing your spelling words

Create Your Own Flash Games

I've been looking for ways to make it a little easier and fun to study our subjects. We discovered a really fun, easy to use website to create flash games. Teachers are able to enter the questions and answers to personalize the game, or may choose from an enormous list of games other teachers have made.

When my oldest child thought it was awesome, the other children heard us having a good time and wanted to make games out of their lessons, too! I had he children help me create the games ~ we picked vocabulary term and concepts out of our books, I had them recite to me the answer and question that I typed in. (They were learning and reviewing just by creating the game - shhh - don't tell them!) Then, of course, we had fun playing the games to reinforce the concepts. In fact, they played them several times with a smile - now you know if I ask them to keep studying the old fashioned way, they wouldn't be as excited. :)

Other Cool Game Lenses!

Sheppard Software

Wow - I love Sheppard Software! My kids have been playing their games for a very long time and still enjoy and learn from them. There is so much, I don't know how to even start to describe what they have!

Sheppard Software offers a great many FREE educational games that are definately high quality. They are not the cutsy games with colorful flashing pictures, but they have solid information and appeal to older students and adults. They do have software that they sell on the site, but these are free ones. Other learning materials may be found on the main site, also.
Geography Games
On the Geography Games main page you will find areas of the world to learn about: Africa, Asia, Canada, The Caribbean, Europe, Mexico, Middle East, Oceania, Central & South America, United States, and The World. Click on the area you are interested in. From there you may choose to study countries, capitals, states or provinces, landscape, or others. Each category starts with a tutorial level and then follows with beginner, intermediate, expert, cartographer, and games. In the top left corner you will find a printable map to use in conjunction with the region you are studying. Some of them are rather difficult, but that's what makes them fun to me. My high schooler will be using these in more depth this year. It sure makes it more fun to memorize countries, capitals, and geographic features than just from a textbook!
Vocabulary Games
The games in this section would be wonderful for advanced middle school , high school, college, and for people like me who need to enhance their vocabulary! They come in the categories of SAT / GRE Prep Words, Vocabulary Context Skills, Expert Word List, Medical Jargon, and Talking Tech (Computer Terminology).
