Learning About England Through Books

My daughter, Jasmine, is going on a trip to England in March 2012. She is going on the trip with a youth group that she attends.

A lot has gone on in preparation for the trip....many fundraisers and getting proper paperwork together.
As of late they have been playing games at the youth group meetings to teach them about different places they plan to visit while in England.

I chose, as part of our homeschool days to read a lot of books about England as the day gets closer for her to take the trip.

In this lens, I am sharing the books that we are reading to learn. This lens will grow until we get to the last book.
I intend to add photos from her trip once it's over and she is back home as well. Maybe some words of her own about things she seen and learned while gone as well.

Update!!! They all had a wonderful time on their trip to England. They seen many things and places while there. I am taking out all photos in this lens and replacing them with photos that my daughter took, or that the youth minister took. I have his permission to share the photos. Parents, including myself, signed paperwork giving permission for photos of our children to be share both online and otherwise. I hope you enjoy the actual shots!

Intro photo was taken of the group before leaving town to head to England. It was taken at the Grace Episcopal church.

Before The Trip.......

.Jasmine made a poster that was put up at our church. It showed pictures of all the places the youth would be visiting in England. In the middle was a thermometer showing her progress on earning and being donated enough money to make the trip.

A couple at church, and another woman went together and bought Jasmine a waterproof jacket, as well as water proof shoes for her trip. She also received a travel wallet from the woman. Thanks to Harley, Pat, and Alice Jane for their love and support of Jasmine's trip!

Lonely Planet England Travel Guide

A very comprehensive travel guide to England. I don't think there is any way that any place is missed. 822 pages!
We are looking up destinations as Jasmine is learning different places they plan to visit on the trip.

Another book of the same title as the previous mentioned. This book is larger with 96 pages. This book contains more history than current events. The book is full of photos. I don't know what would be missed talking about in this book. It includes an overview of England, A Closer Look at England and Relations wit North America.

Items of Interest to Us as We Are Learning

Jasmine and I are both including things we are learning that are of interest to us to this list
  • 1The average temperature in England in the summer is only 63 degrees.
  • 2St. Paul's Cathedral has 530 lung-busting stairs to climb to the Golden Gallery at the very top.
  • 3Also with St. Paul's Cathedral there is a walkway called the Whispering Gallery. Called this because if you whisper close to the wall it can be heard on the opposite side 32 m. away.
  • 4England is 50,333 square miles, which is just a little smaller than the US state of Alabama.
  • 5Queen Elizabeth I reigned for 45 years.
  • 6The internet was invented in England.

Christmas in England

This book is really for smaller children. It has a full page photo next to a page of text. Within the text it tells about a different part of celebrating Christmas in England. It gives definitions for little ones to understand what such things are like ornaments, what the word celebrate means, etc. Even though it is for younger children we enjoyed reading it and looking at the pictures.

The book is pictures---all in black and white---with words telling what each photo it. Even though it's in black and white it was great looking through it!

Ah, it is nearly March and somebody is surely getting excited about their trip to England. Remember, England swings and something about a pendulum? Well, we have a LOT of lensmasters in the UK ... perhaps a hook-up is in order?

How wonderful that Jasmine gets to travel to England with the youth group! I look forward to the photos, fun, and information shared upon her return.

I like making (and reading) travel pages like this--started before the trip as a learning and planning experience--and then maybe updated afterwards. I'd like to do one for an upcoming trip this summer, but since WHERE we're going is a surprise for my boyfriend (the Inca Trail / Machu Picchu), I can't take the chance he'd see it. :) Anyhow, I'm interested in your lens in particular because we're hoping to go to England next summer.

This club is a place to share, organize, and discuss how and what we learn in the world. Make a free page to tell your own homeschooling story and share your favorite resources.
