Learning About Greece Through Books
The first place I head to on our weekly trips to the public library, is the shelves of new books in the children's section. A couple of weeks ago they had a stack of books about Greece. I picked them all up! They were of interest to me since in Bible study at church we talk about Greece quite often.
Yes, Jasmine is 15, and a freshmen in high school. The books came from the children's section and even though most of them are short, the photos are great!
We are having a good time and a learning time reading through them. I decided to share what we are learning, and the books we are reading here in a lens. This lens will grow as we get more of them read through.

Learning of Interest to Us
Below is a list of the things that we've read about that really interested us:
1. School gets out at 2:30 pm and they are not fed lunch. They eat a late lunch at home because supper is not served in Greece until 8 or 9 pm.
2. Greece is only 50,718 square miles but has a population of 10,647,529!! (this prompted a search online to see what the Kansas stats are. We found that Kansas is 82,264 square miles and our population is 2,853,118. Wow!)
3. The majority of the population of Greece is Greek Orthodox. In other words--Christian.
4. Children usually stop going to school at the age of 15 so that they can go to work to help the family.
5. Jasmine found it interesting that teens in Greece enjoy some of the same music groups that she does: Evanescence, Linkin Park and HIM
6. Legal Ages: alcohol consumption 16, driver's license 18, employment 16, leave school 15, marriage 18, military service 18 and voting 18.
7. Ancient Greece was somewhat like the pioneer days here in the United States as far as children having to help with the household chores.
8. In Ancient Greece the father's chose who the daughters married, and this was usually at the age of 13.--only boys from wealthy families got to attend school, girls from wealthy families had a tutor---poor children didn't get an education.
9. In ancient Greece, women were rarely allowed to leave the home--they were to stay home and take care of the children and everything about the home. Even wealthy women had to stay home and instruct the slaves.
10. In Sparta both boys and girls were taken from their families at the age of 7 and trained in different sports. The girls were trained so that they would become healthy women in order to bear strong sons that would make good soldiers.

P.S. What is The Homeschool Club?
THE HOMESCHOOL CLUB is real parents and kids sharing their best resources for great homeschooling. Each day we celebrate learning by opening doors to a world of creativity, knowledge and discovery. In the car, at the kitchen sink, and down by the frog pond - the whole world is our classroom and we explore it with creative projects, games, and activities. This club is a place to share, organize, and discuss how and what we learn in the world. Make a free page to tell your own homeschooling story and share your favorite resources.
