Play Better Golf With Proper Lessons and Tips
Drills For Better Putting
Knowing all of this, any golfer, especially the novice, should invest their time in practicing putting accuracy. Even if you are not very strong at driving or chipping, you can make up a lot of points by perfecting your putts. The thing that surprises me is that most learner golfers never seem to ask for instructors who specialize in putting, or even ask for tips on putting, this is sure to cripple their game if they neglect practising the putting.
Now I'm going to share with you, five lessons so you can perfect your putting skills.
1. Your Stance
Make your grip on the putter quite limp or loosely. When the putter is under your eyes, allow gravity to make the putter drop to the ground. When this is done, be comfortable that the putter is in line with the ball and the target line to the hole. This means the putter will strike the ball and send it directly toward the hole along the target line. If the putter is not aligned properly, just take baby steps forward or back to get the putter in line with the ball. Your body should be positioned slightly behind the ball. The ball should not be directly in the centre of your two feet, it should be a little more toward the left foot. This is so that when the putter hits the ball it only stays pressed against the ball for a minimum length of time as it prevents the ball from jumping to the left or right as it is being pushed by the putter. Your hands should also be forward along with the ball, to get a better feel of the putt. Make sure the left forearm is in line with the shaft of the golf club as much as possible. You will get much better roll on the ball if you have all of these points addressed accurately.
2. Watch your Gripping!
Gripping onto the putter can be done in so many ways but is very important not to have a dominant hand on the putter while holding it. If you have one of your hands tighter than the other, this will cause the tension in your shoulders to be uneven. The shoulder to the hand that is tighter on the putter will be more tense than the loose hand's shoulder. This will result in a missed putt! Your hands should work together and feel like you have one hand on the putter as much as possible. Use 50% grip on the putter, it should feel a little tighter than you would be holding the putter idle as if just walking with the putter in one of your hands. The putting action is supposed to start in the arms and shoulders, the hands are just used to stop the putter falling to the ground, it is not usual that they be used to swing it.
3. Aiming
Golfers tend to glance at the target and stare at the ball. While on the practice green, try practising looking at the hole, allowing your eyes to tell your body how far to roll the ball and how much acceleration it needs. When you are putting, use the feeling that your eyes have just told you to perform the putt. Improving your feel will improve the putting performance and obviously will lower your scores. Also be sure the blade is square to the hole and do not lean your head to one side, this will change your view of the target line and result in you hitting the ball slightly off target.
4. Making the Stroke
Refrain from moving the other parts of the body except for the shoulders and arms. Minimize the wrists pivot and bend motions. Distribute your body weight equally and don't rotate the hips or bend your back. Also keep your head still; this will put you off if you keep moving it.
5. Control the Acceleration
Many golfers make the fundamental error of swinging the club too fast the hitting the brakes when the club gets close to the ball. This is incorrect because you will jump and make the club veer to the left or right of the correct line with the ball, so you will end up slicing the ball and sending it in the wrong direction.
To stop this from happening you must be sure to have an equal and steady backswing as the stroke. Then you will keep the club in the proper target line with the ball. Remember: Move through the golf ball rather than striking it, you want to push the ball toward the hole!
