I think associating letter with animals is also a great way to take something they already know about and think is fun, and then incorporating that into learning something new. There are lots of animal alphabets out there, but check out this cute one - http://www.alphabetimals.com

great lens for parents to teach alphabet to their kids...
  • nelcea Aug 7, 2011 @ 11:01 pm | delete
well alphabet teaching tips. umm . .we have this really big dry erase board. on our wall.we color everything on it the younger ones have the bottom and we taller ones have the top. so we put backward or the worst color of a letter and challenge some one no matter the age what it is. some times we teem up and do points by the end of the day who ever figured it out gets a special treat. or maybe not but it does get figured out we never let it go it has to be corrected. usually it is belongs o someones name. and we will add on to it the rest of the alphabet . it keeps our 3 and 4 year-old going.

my daughter also learned the alphabet at this age, very helpful has been a game (german) where she could click on any character and it transformed into an animal:
many great sites to find in the net which help little ones to start with the alphabet

I don't remember how I taught mine the alphabet, but she was reading (and discussing) the newspaper by the time she started school, so I guess it worked OK. She was terribly bored in first grade, though.

My son taught himself the alphabet before he was 2 years old. The moment of grasping the concept for him was when he understood that the letter represented on a wooden block was the same as that represented in a different font on another puzzle. He could not pronounce all of the letters initially and so substituted his own words consistently until he could.

I always have taight children the alphabet, sometimes 12 year olds have gone unnoticed in the class, so it is so important to start this as early as possible! I used the piano to help them learn the alphabet song, disguised as learning the piano! Great success, with even the older students asking to learn it!

Great info! My daughter is only one but her favorite song is the ABC song and she already says "ABC" when we start singing. I know we're off to a great start but I wasn't sure how to teach the significance of the letters when the time comes. This lens will come in handy!

My son is only two years old (he's actually the star of most of my lenses) and he knows ALL of his alphabet in order and out of order. I think the advice you give is great and extremely useful. I personally used alphabet books, puzzles and believe it or not Blues Clues as an episode called the "Alphabet Train" that really boosted his alphabet development. You should check that out and see what you can find on YouTube because I know the main song for that show is out there and would make a great addition to this lens.

When I worked in the Maria Montessori class in Sweden, we used to teach in a similar way. The children were making letters out of anything and everything. Clay, pipecleaners, candy even. hehehe
