Knowing How To Choose a Diamond

Whatever your reason may be for purchasing this popular gemstone, knowing how to choose a diamond can help you make an intelligent decision without being overwhelmed. Diamonds are formed deep within the Earth's mantle and are mined in specific areas of the world where the rocked are more than one billion years old.

They come to the surface from deep cone-shaped volcanoes, which carry bits and pieces of mantle and rock to the surface. Diamonds are currently mined in over twenty-five countries all over the world, except for Europe and Antarctica.

The most common places associated with diamond mining are South Africa and and South America. But other countries, such as Australia and Russia, are beginning to harvest more of these precious gemstone.
Knowing The Four Qualities

The most important part of learning how to choose a diamond is determining a stone's value. Diamond are graded upon what gemmologists call the 4 C's. These are color, clarity, cut and carat. Depending on what you are looking for in a diamond will determine which of the 4 C's you will focus most upon.

With just a few minor exceptions, all diamonds worth any value will be graded according to this scale.
Color
Color is seen by many to be the most important factor when buying a diamond. The more "colorless" a diamond is, the greater the value of the stone. The original color system that was used in the 1930's graded diamonds using A, B and C. But today's scale starts with the letter D. Those ranging from D to F, are considered "colorless". The next level ranges from G to J and these diamonds are labelled as "near colorless" or "white".
Diamonds in the K to Z range usually have some tint to them. However, not all diamonds with color are considered less valuable.
Clarity

Clarity is determined by how many "flaws" are visible by the human eye or with power magnification. Clarity grades, are therefore, judged according to what is viewed with 10 power magnification. Flawless diamonds are stone that have no visible inclusions when using one of these magnifiers.

These stones are very hard to find and can be quite expensive too. The grades are V,S and I, which stand for Very, Small and Inclusion.

The closer you are to the V on a clarity scale, the less likely a diamond will have flaws that are visible with the human eye. Clarity is what sets a diamond apart from a gem because not every diamond can be considered a gemstone.
Cut
How a diamond is cut will tell a lot about the capabilities of the person who did the cutting. Diamond cutters are aiming to cut a diamond at ideal proportions, which can be difficult task when a diamond is not mined correctly.
There are many cuts available for a diamond and all of them sparkle differently. The cut is what allows the facets of a diamond to reflect light, giving it "fiery" appearance. If a diamond is cut proportionally, then it will sparkle brilliantly no matter what shape the stone is in.
Example of diamond shapes are round, oval, marquise, radiant, pear-shaped, emerald or even heart-shaped.
Carat
Just because a diamond is big does not mean it is valuable. Carat is the weight of the diamond alone. The size of a diamond can be spread differently, depending on the cut.
Nearly 250 tonnes of ore have to be mined and then processed before one can squeeze out a one-carat diamond. The difficulty to produce and mine various sizes of diamonds are what gives these precious stones their significant values.

Do Your Research First Before You Decide To Buy One
When you make major purchases in life, such as buying a car or a house, you do research and learn what you need to know.
The same principle goes when it comes to diamonds. It is important to learn how to choose a diamond before you considered one of the most prized possessions among both men and women around the world. There, when it comes time to pick out yours, you want to get the very best.

Diamond At Wikipedia
In mineralogy, diamond (from the ancient Greek ?????? - adámas "unbreakable") is an allotrope of carbon, where the carbon atoms are arranged in a variation of the face-centered cubic crystal structure called a diamond lattice. Diamond is less stable than graphite, but the conversion rate from diamond to graphite is negligible at ambient conditions. Diamond is renowned as a material with superlative physical qualities, most of which originate from the strong covalent bonding between its atoms. In particular, diamond has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any bulk material. Those properties determine the major industrial application of diamond in cutting and polishing tools.
Diamond has remarkable optical characteristics. Because of its extremely rigid lattice, it can be contaminated by very few types of impurities, such as boron and nitrogen. Combined with the wide transparency, this results in the clear, colorless appearance of most natural diamonds. Small amounts of defects or impurities (about one per million of lattice atoms) color diamond blue (boron), yellow (nitrogen), brown (lattice defects), green, purple, pink, orange or red. Diamond also has relatively high optical dispersion, that is ability to disperse light of different colors, which results in its characteristic luster. Excellent optical and mechanical properties, combined with efficient marketing, make diamond the most popular gemstone.
Most natural diamonds are formed at high-pressure high-temperature conditions existing at depths of in the Earth mantle. Carbon-containing minerals provide the carbon source, and the growth occurs over periods from 1 billion to 3.3 billion years (25% to 75% of the age of the Earth). Diamonds are brought close to the Earth surface through deep volcanic eruptions by a magma, which cools into igneous rocks known as kimberlites and lamproites. Diamonds can also be produced synthetically in a high-pressure high-temperature process which approximately simulates the conditions in the Earth mantle. An alternative, and completely different growth technique is chemical vapor deposition. Several non-diamond materials, which include cubic zirconia and silicon carbide and are often called diamond simulants, resemble diamond in appearance and many properties. Special gemological techniques have been specially developed to distinguish natural and synthetic diamonds and diamond simulants.

- When the diamond is loose it can be evaluated by yourself or a qualified independent diamond appraiser using the latest diamond evaluation and grading tools. The diamond can be inspected from every single angle to make certain that it is indeed of the quality and beauty that you desire. This is something that cannot be done with the same degree of effectiveness once the diamond has been set in a ring.
