Vietnamese Basic Facts

The Vietnamese language is spoken by more than 80 million people across the world. Approximately 65 million people in Vietnam speak the language but it is also spoken by people living in Cambodia, Laos, and the USA as well as in Cambodia, France, Australia, Laos, Canada and a number of other countries. 86% of the population in Vietnam speak Vietnamese as their first language.

Though its linguistic connection to the Chinese language in all areas has not been definitively established, the Vietnamese language is a tonal language like Chinese. Vietnamese was originally written in Siniform, a Chinese-like writing script. Like Korean and Japanese, extensive vocabulary has been borrowed from the Chinese language.

Vietnamese has been the official language of Vietnam since it gained independence from France in 1954. The influence of Western culture on Vietnamese is clear as it is now written in the western alphabet. During the 17th century Roman Catholic missionaries introduced a Latin orthography which remains today.

Talk The Talk Vietnamese Software

Perfect for Teenagers Learning Vietnamese

type=textTalk The Talk Vietnamese

TALK The Talk is designed with teenagers' social lives in mind. It concentrates on the words and phrases young people need for social conversation, including plenty of useful, up-to-date vocabulary.

It then builds their spoken confidence, allowing them to compare their accent to that of a native speaker.

Will it work for me?

This program is best suited for teenagers who are beginning to get to grips with Vietnamese. It's best if you know some basic vocabulary before you start.

Because it's aimed at recent beginners, everything you hear will be clearly spoken at a speed that you can easily keep up with.
What will I learn?

To talk about the things that are relevant to you. We won't bother you with lots of information you won't need or don't find interesting.

Talk The Talk teaches phrases like "I'll send you a text message later" and "we won the game on penalties". Topics include family, school, hobbies, travelling, home, technology, work and sport.

How does it work?

Watch and learn! See and hear how to speak Vietnamese by watching video footage of native speakers.

Build confidence on a computer. Before testing your new speaking skills in the real world, record yourself, then play back to compare your pronunciation with a native speaker. (Note that we don't use electronic voice analysis: the human ear is usually much more accurate.)

Play interactive games. The comprehension quiz prompts you to react to real life situations, while a challenging recording quiz tests your knowledge and pronunciation.

You earn points for every game you play. High scorers can go on to win bronze, silver and gold awards, which you can print out as a record of achievement.

You can learn on the move. Carry on learning in the airport lounge or on the ferry. Just print out the phrasebook sheets included in the program and take them with you.

Fast Ways to Learn Vietnamese

By Jim Oneil

There are many things you should know about the boat people, besides how it feels like to have been living all your life rowing and transacting all daily chores in a boat. You might be surprised to know that there are many of these boat people or the Vietnamese people who now live in the States. It is said that there are about 3 million Vietnamese people who now live overseas.

If you happen to have a friend or a partner in business who speaks Vietnamese and you are thinking of learning it as a second language, then maybe you should start researching about the Vietnamese language. The Vietnamese language used to go by the name Annamese. It is one of the Austroasiatic languages. It is the official language of the Vietnamese people who make up 86% of the country's current population. It has been said that some of the Vietnamese language words are derived from the Chinese language. Even the written version of the Vietnamese language is based on the Chinese language. The Vietnamese language denotes a lot of abstractions as it took some words from the Chinese. This is the same way as the English got theirs from Greek and Latin. As a matter of fact, the current written language is a variation of the original Latin.

One thing that might push you to choose learning the Vietnamese language among the many languages that are available is that it is ranked as the seventh most spoken language in the whole United States. In fact, there are several states where it ranked first and third. In Australia, it is the most spoken language. So it seems that wherever you go, there appears to be a reason for you to learn the Vietnamese language.

Although Vietnam is just starting to regain its economic independence, the Vietnamese people remained loyal and steadfast in their regard for their leader Ho Chi Minh who fought for the country's independence from the French rule. If you are going to check on the history of Vietnam you would know that there is something beyond the Vietnam War that became controversial during the 1970's and that Vietnam's fight against foreign rule has been there ever since 19th century.

There are many other aspects of Vietnam that are yet starting to be known in the world. An example of this is tourism, which has been experiencing a significant increase. The Vietnamese owe it to their getting popular beaches and the boat tours. So for you to learn the Vietnamese language fast and easy, you can make use of Pimsleur's language learning audio programs that are available in The Talking Bookstore. With this, you can learn Vietnamese anytime, anywhere, and at your own pace.

For those who want the real thing, here is a concise list of Vietnamese language learning audio courses: Learn the Vietnamese Language
