Learn Piano - You're never too old
Learn Piano at any age
At any age, adults have the ability to learn a musical instrument, although they usually have less time. So no matter what your age, whether you are ten or one hundred and ten, what are you waiting for - start learning today.
There are a couple of ways to learn piano each with their own benefits:
1. Hire A Piano Teacher
This allows you personal, face to face interaction - usually on a weekly basis where they are able to teach you, and correct you. This is a great way to learn piano, but you are limited in the contact hours you have with your teacher which may slow your learning.
2. Teach Yourself with Books
This would have to be the hardest way, because you are just working by yourself and you can never be sure if you have understood the books correctly.
3. Internet and Video Courses
These are quite new to the market. They are video or dvd lessons that you can work through at your own pace. The benefit here is you have the teacher so you know if you are doing it right, and you can work at your own pace - as quickly or as slow as you like.

"This method is good for novice users. If you know anything about keyboard/piano playing this method is not for you. On the other hand, if you know nothing about keyboard/piano this is a good method. Unlike the Alfred series books which include instruction in text and musical examples on the CD (if you are lucky enough to find the CD..its not on amazon.com), Piano Presto includes the music and instruction on the CD. The book contains mostly the written music and helpful diagrams. The musical examples are very simple and some might find them boring. They are however a refreshing change from the typical ("super-boring") simple songs in other beginner methods (e.g. scarborough fair, london bridge, twinkle twinkle yada yada yada)
The two most difficult pieces in the text are "Prelude in C" and "Fur Elise". The method does a good job of teaching musical notation and sight reading but is a bit short on music theory.
When I'm done with this book I will move onto another piano method that I highly recommend for knowledgeable beginner/ intermediate piano players "The Piano Handbook". "

Perhaps you wish you had learned as a child, or would like to give your kids the skill? Playing the piano can be perceived as a difficult thing to learn in its own right. So, certainly, playing at any level of more than basic competency could be seen as years away. I urge you not to be discouraged. While it is true that learning anything new takes some time and some determination, including the willingness to fail and look foolish, learning to play the piano is now possible in just ten minutes a day.

A New Way to Learn Piano

Take a look at the common options available now in instruction online. No longer do you have to learn from someone who is not a top notch teacher. That really makes a difference. Having world class instructors available to you throughout your training can make what used to take weeks now only take hours. Consider your options online. You have access to some of the best teachers with the most modern theory of instruction. Major strides have been made in the past 20 years in teaching instruments and you owe it to yourself to look into this.
You can have some minor successes pretty early on. In my first couple of weeks of instruction in the piano, I was able to play a simple Billy Joel song. Having that win allowed me to move forward into harder pieces. But it wasn't that hard to do in the first place. This is really what I want to impress upon you. You can learn how to play the piano quickly with the proper teachers. Don't waste time on a lot of silly stuff. Find a great course and go!
What is it you really want to do with the piano? Do you want to be able to play holiday songs for your family? Are you interested in impressing someone else? Certainly, playing a Joplin rag or a piece of classical will pretty much knock the socks off of anyone you choose to show this skill to. Women look twice at a man like that. Do you want to sit down at any piano and play a simple song that expresses your emotions at the moment? It's a wonderful thing to be able to do. So, get your goals together, and move forward confidently to quality instruction, knowing that you can learn how to master this skill quickly.

The piano is a musical instrument which is played by means of a keyboard. Widely used in Western music for solo performances, ensemble use, chamber music, and accompaniment, the piano is also very popular as an aid to composing and rehearsal. Although not portable and often expensive, the piano's versatility and ubiquity have made it one of the world's most familiar musical instruments.
Pressing a key on the piano's keyboard causes a felt covered hammer to strike steel strings. The hammers rebound, allowing the strings to continue vibrating at their resonant frequency."Hammer Time" by John Kiehl, Wolfram Demonstrations Project. These vibrations are transmitted through a bridge to a sounding board that couples the acoustic energy to the air so that it can be heard as sound. When the key is released, a damper stops the string's vibration. See the article on Piano key frequencies for a picture of the piano keyboard and the location of middle-C. Pianos are percussive.
