Learn English Online

This lens is about learning English online. There are many free English courses online that can help you improve English speaking and writing abilities. Many people think you have to take a class in a building to learn English. That's not true! There are dozens of great places to learn English online for free right from the comfort of your home computer!

Pros and Cons of Learning English Online

A free English course can improve your language abilities.

Have you ever considered improving your English skills by taking a free online English course? Many exchange students and immigrants to English-speaking nations forget that we live in an age where it is no longer necessary to attend a brick-and-mortar education class. Instead of paying high tuition fees to learn English in a classroom setting, you can learn English online for free!

Here are some of the pros and cons of learning English online.

Pros

  • Free!

  • Can learn on your own schedule

  • Learn from your living room

  • No social anxiety related to classmates or teacher/student question-and-answer sessions

  • Internet materials easier to organize than paper notes and a textbook

  • Online quizzes and games make learning more enjoyable

  • Did I mention its free?

  • Not exposed to a single teacher that may or may not be worth their salt as an English instructor

Cons

  • Must be self-motivated which can be hard for those who lack discipline

  • Not every online English course contains helpful information

  • No interpersonal connection with an instructor to serve as someone to ask questions to

The biggest concern people have with learning English online is #2 on my list of cons: that the English course won't be helpful or will contain errant information. After all, who wants to take an English course written by a bunch of foreigners trying to make a buck off of a website, right?

Thankfully there's Google.

Before trusting a free online English course, check their search engine to see where the site ranks. Since the online English industry is so competitive, the results from Google searches for "Learn English", "Learn English Online", and "Improve English" should yield a wealth of information. Most of the top few sites for those keywords are all good places to learn English online.

Don't feel like you have to stick with just one website when learning English online. Mix and match! Some website might be great for learning sentence structure, pronouns, apostrophe usage, etc, while others might be better for things like verb conjugation, adjectives, and speech tips.

One major benefit of learning English online is that you are your own teacher! Rather than following a pre-scripted lesson plan that might rush through some topics while spending way too much time on others, YOU decide what topics you learn and when you learn them.

By choosing to learn English online rather than in a classroom, you're using modern technology as your ally in your personal linguistic learning path.
