You Too Can Learn to Knit On YouTube
Did you know you could learn to knit on youtube? Who would have thought I could learn to knit after more than 20 years of trying to figure it out? And who in the world would have thought I would finally learn to knit on YouTube? Learning to knit seemed impossible!
I am a certified yarn junkie - I've been crocheting since I was a teenager and that was a long time ago now, but knitting just left me in knots for some reason! I even paid for lessons at a local yarn shop! Somehow, knitting remained a mystery.
But I'm determined (most folks would say stubborn) and I knew I could do it, so off I went...to Learn To Knit on YouTube!

How I learned to knit from YouTube videos
It's much easier to Learn To Knit from videos
I'm going to share with you some of the videos I used to learn how to cast on and learn how to knit by the continental method. Knitting isn't so hard to learn when you can "rewind" the video, or stop it to see what's going on!I was able to try out several different ways of casting on until I found the way that works for me. Now it's super easy to knit and I can fly.
Even better, I finally figured out why I had such a hard time learning how to knit before. It was just too awkward for me and I couldn't "get it."
Now, I learned the continental knitting method, also called "picking," where you hold the yarn in your left hand - and WOW! It just feels more like crocheting, which I've been doing for years!. Once I got that down...the knitting needles really started flying!
Now I'm working on getting the basic knitting stitches down, and there won't be any stopping me! But that's another story...
Supplies You Need To Learn How To Knit
Just the basic knitting tools...
What supplies do you need to learn to knit?*knitting needles; probably at least a size 9 or 10 pair (US Size). That size felt the most comfortable as I was learning to knit. I recommend bamboo knitting needles. Another problem I had was trying to use aluminum knitting needles which felt too slippery - or at least they were for me.
*a good soft yarn; worsted weight; your favorite brand. For learning, I just grabbed a skein of yarn out of my bulging stash.
*your computer and internet connection to watch the YouTube videos. Me, I just pulled up a comfy chair to my desk and played them on my laptop while I practiced casting on, the knit stitch and the purl stitch. It worked really well!

Knitting & Crocheting Means I need MORE Yarn
Because there is no such thing as too much yarn!
Step 1: Learn to Cast On In Knitting
How to get that pesky knitting yarn onto the knitting needles
The first thing I learned was that there are dozens of ways of casting on. Oh my!
So, the best thing to do is to try different methods of casting on and see which one feels the most comfortable to you.

Step 2: Choose your knitting method, according to your own comfort level.
Continental Knitting (European; picking) or American Knitting (throwing)
There are two styles of knitting, based on how the yarn is held and worked. The Continental knitting method or the American knitting method. Choosing between them is basically a matter of preference when you're able to choose ahead of time. After years of failing at the American knitting method, I learned the continental knitting method in ONE EVENING. Personally, I believe the knitted stitches are more uniform and the tension in the yarn is easier to control for me with continental knitting.
The 'learn how to knit' videos will tell you to wrap the knitting yarn around your pinkie finger as well as your hand. I've even stopped doing that as get more comfortable and confident with my knitting. But remember, I've crocheted for 30 years (*cough*...ok a little longer), so I'm used to controlling yarn tension.
You want to be as comfortable as possible with your knitting method choice because you'll want it to become second nature to you for speed later. You'll see what I mean as you try them out. One style will feel clumsier than the other, almost uncomfortable.
Following the 'learn to knit' videos in this section, you'll also learn the basic knit or "garter" stitch in each style or method. It's the basic stitch for knitting.

Step 3: The Purl Stitch
When You Master This Knitting Stitch, You're On Your Way
Now it's time to learn the second basic stitch in knitting ~ the purl stitch.Just a tiny bit awkward at first, but easy to pick up. I thought I was going to have to call the paramedics to untangle my hands.
Making a row of knit stitches and a row of purl stitches creates what is called stockinette or stocking stitch. With this, you alternate between knit and purl stitches on the same or different rows to create different effects.
And that's everything! Now all you need is to practice, practice, practice!
Knitting - Basic Purl Stitch (Continental Method)
You Can Learn To Knit!
Yarn is held in left hand. The middle finger (or index finger) is used to push the yarn down and to the right, to where the right needle can easily push it back through the stitch. This method requires the fewest hand movements of any purl method, and is consequently the fastest (with the exception, perhaps, of the "Combined Knitting Method" of purling--see below).
