Ranked #8,469 in Music, #231,484 overall

A way to learn piano without regular lessons and sheet music

Playing the piano is wonderful skill. The piano makes a amazing sound, whether played by a proffessional musican or a beginner player. It sometimes seems impossible to learn, and frustrating at times, but the effort is well worth it. This lens is about one way to learn, for both beginners who have never touched piano keys in their life, or the musician who wants to learn a new technique for playing. Feel free to ask questions in the comments section, and share your story about how you learned to play piano.

Enjoy!

My Story And How It Works

The premise of the Piano for Life series is that regular piano teaching focuses on sheet music and that it takes a long time before you can actually play any real music, not just the cute little pieces that they have for you to practice notes.

They actually take the methods of the great piano masters, such as Mozart, and how they learned. They did not have sheet music to work off of. They had to play on their own just playing the keys to make music. Same thought in the dvds: Learn to just play the piano and be independent of sheet music while playing beautiful music at the same time.

Here is my story of using this method:

I always wanted to learn to play the piano.

My parents signed me for regular piano lessons when I was young. My teacher was wonderful, but then she moved away and that was that. I never touched the piano again.

Then my mom bought Piano for Quitters and Piano for Life series of dvds. I thought that it was cool, but I never touched them for a couple years.

Finally I made a resolution to start watching the dvds and learning to play the piano once again. So I began, and in the first lesson I learned a couple basics that I had never heard before: Chords. I never knew what chords were or that music was made up of them, but now I did.

Over the course of Piano for Quitters I learned all the names of the keys on the piano, learned how to play both basic and kind of complex chords, rhythm and how to do both major and minor chords.

I thought that this was wonderful, but I really wanted to play sheet music. Yes, I know that is very traditional, but I my friend had lots of sheet music by some of my favorite musicians and I REALLY wanted to play them, so I started on Piano for Life.

I learned more chord structures in this series, but I also learned some exercises for my hands to make them move faster, easier and better when I am playing.

Finally in lesson 19 I learned to read music, in one lesson. Yes, that is right, I learned what the lines and spaces mean and how they connect to the keyboard in ONE LESSON. Not in a whole bunch of lessons spread out over the course of a year. I always thought that reading music would be hard, but it is so EASY.

I have a couple little kid piano lesson books from way back when that I am practicing from until I get real sheet music. Being able to just learn the notes in one lesson has resulted in that I can jump around the book from song to song without having to worry about learning anything new. I can go from Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star to Ode to Joy with only the turn of a page and not have to worry about anything. It is so great and I cannot wait to practice playing my new sheet music books!

If you are having trouble learning to play the piano, or if you are burnt out from lessons long ago, then these dvds are for you. They can help anyone at any level of playing to learn the piano, improve their skills or just get off of dependence on sheet music.
