How To Leash Train Your Dog

In 7 Simple Steps

Does your puppy look at you curiously when you pull out the leash? Does your newly adopted older dog display evidence of having never been exposed to a leash? In either case, you might find yourself following the steps below to leash train your dog.

Step 1: First, you'll need the proper gear. Depending on your dog breed, you'll need to choose a collar. You can choose between a leather or fabric collar, a choke or prong chain, or a halter or lead. Invest in a high quality sturdy leash as well.

Step 2: If your dog is unfamiliar with a leash, you need to introduce it to him slowly. Allow him to sniff it, but do not allow him to chew on it as if were a toy. When he seems comfortable with the leash, put it on him and let it drag behind him as he wears it around the house. Make sure he is supervised at all times so that he doesn't get stuck on anything or find himself in any danger.

Step 3: Each time he wears the leash, praise him. You can give him a treat each time you remove it or you can simply show him affection.

Step 4: Make sure your dog knows and responds to the sit command. This command is vital to leash training and if you haven't trained your dog to respond to "sit", now is the time to teach him.

Step 5: Leash your dog and have him sit next to you, off to one side of your heels. From this position, you'll want to teach him a walk command, such as "go" or "walk". Each time you say the command, give a gentle tug on his leash and walk a few feet forward. This practice is best accomplished in an area free of distraction (even your living room will work!).

Step 6: Each time your dog responds to the go command, praise him with affection or a treat. Soon, the command will be second nature to him.

Step 7: Now that he's comfortable with the sit and go commands, as well as with his new leash, walk him outside along a sidewalk or trail. Keep a short leash and make sure he is close to your side at all times. This practice is a natural lead up to teaching him the heel command while walking on a leash.
