Since no element of your wardrobe goes unnoticed, you need to pay attention to even the most utilitarion part of your outfit.  Yes!!  That would be your belt.  Here are a few simple rules that might help you choose the right one.

1.  There are two types of belts, casual and formal.  You can tell the difference by the rule of thumb.  If the belt is the width of your thumb or less it is a dress belt.  Casual belts are considerably wider.  Dress belts usually have a shiny or semi shiny fininsh while casual belts come in matte, muted, distressed, grommetted and several other finishes.

2.  There are three main colors, black, brown and tan.  You should own at least one casual and one dress belt in each of these colors.  There are other colors you may want to include in your wardrobe but these are the colors you should definitely have.
