1907 Leather Post Cards: Teddy Bears & More

Picture post cards became incredibly popular throughout the United States in the early 1900's. They were the Beanie Babies of their day.

Picture post cards were the most readily available way to get an insight into the rest of the world. They became actively collected and used as inexpensive communication in the era before the telephone became common in every home.

At this time in many areas there were actually two mail deliveries a day, morning and afternoon. In some areas, it was possible to post a card in the morning and get a response in the same afternoon.

One category of picture post cards are the leather post card. These were simply postcards made of real leather onto which was burned an image. The purpose of this lens is to show a few of my favorite Leather Post Cards from the period around 1907 a century ago.

We will start off with a century old leather post card with a multi-color American Flag. This card was mailed from Ann Arbor Michigan to Chicago.

Enjoy the Cards Below. They are just a sample of the world of Leather post cards. Please remember to rate this page - five stars would be nice. Thanks!

The Flag

The next card is a leather Portrait of Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt. Handwritten notation on the card suggests that if he was a Democrat he would be better, but "he is all right". and a notation at top that says, "This is a Teddy Bear." It is also dated at the top in 1907, but this card was not mailed, so there is no confirming postmark. The Pro Teddy sentiment, and the Teddy Bear comment offer insight into the public opinion of the day if only anecdotally.

Teddy Roosevelt

Teddy Bears apparently quickly became associated with Valentines and love. The next card shows a cupid standing on a Teddy Bear offering a heart to a Girl in the Window. This card is also partially colored, with the Teddy Belt and Heart in Red. The belt with the wording "Teddy" indicates that the association between bears and Teddy was still in process.  Cards like this helped cement the relationship in the eyes of the American people. Copyrighted in 1907, Mailed in Boston March 22nd, 1907.

Teddy Bears Hug Little Teddy Bears. Here Mamma Bear with Red and Green Hat hugs her little Teddy Bears Tight. This card while addressed was not separately posted in the mail. Mama Teddy Bear and Baby

Leather Post Card as Pigskin.

Football American Style was not as common a topic in 1906, but this card took note that a football was something to "Kick About. This card was posted in Omaha and sent to Rhyolite, Nevada in July of 1907.

Football

Lets get back to the real American Sport, Spooning & Mooning. This next unusual leather card was cut to resemble a hand offer a heart. Unusually shaped cards are not rare, but fall into the uncommon category. This particular items was postally used. Loving Hand

Romance on a Speedboat.
This handcrafted card has a bold flag applique added, with a multicolor paint job. Speedboat

Some cards were apparently mass produced and =offered much finer toolwork. This last card shows the River from the Viaduct, Cleveland, O. Mailed form Cleveland to Indianapolis, again in 1907.

Cleveland Riverfront

I hope you enjoyed seeing these cards. I am primarily a postal history dealer, but I get into post cards from time to time.
