Cost Effective Ways to Reduce Your Lighting Bill with LED Light Bulbs for the Home

The LED light bulb market is just beginning to take off as the prices for them have come down. The benefits of LED light bulbs are in their efficiency of energy. Efficient use of energy is an environmental issue that could be minimized through simple acts like replacing incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs. Some LED light bulbs are 90% more efficient than their conventional incandescent counterparts. For example, you can replace a 7 watt LED light bulb with a 65 watt equivalent incandescent bulb and get the same amount of light as measured in lumens. LED light bulbs also far out live incandescent bulbs with a lifespan of between 30,000 hours and 50,000 hours compared to 1000 to 2000 hour lifespans.

You might be wondering what ever happened to using compact fluorescent light bulbs or CFL's. Those type of bulbs save energy over their incandescent counterparts but they are not as efficient as LED bulbs are and LED bulbs also don't have mercury inside of them. The mercury in compact fluorescent light bulbs, although not harmful in your home, need to be specially recycled at your local home improvement store to prevent mercury contamination build up in land fills. With LED light bulbs, you don't need to worry about the hazardous materials in case you accidently break a bulb in your home, and you get additional savings every month in your utility bill.

At this point, you might be saying, well these bulbs sound great, where can I get them and how much do they cost?

The upfront costs on LED light bulbs are a bit on the high side. If you are firm believer in the environment and your wallet, you will save both the planet from unnecessary energy consumption and you will save on your wallet in long run with reduced electricity bills. Luckily, I found this really helpful Energy Savings Calculator to help you determine the true cost over the lifetime of your LED light bulb compare to whatever you currently have now.

For an even better break down on the LED Globe Light Bulbs, I read a product review over at The Environmental Blog. It spells out pro's and con's of making the switch...but mostly the pro's.

Holiday LED Lights

Christmas LED Lighting

White wire LED lighting

Everyone knows the holidays are around the corner. That's why it's important to think ahead when it comes to your holiday lighting displays. Highly efficient holiday LED lights are going to give you the best solution for displaying the holiday spirit and keep your energy bill to a minimum. Christmas LED lighting can save you hundreds on your utility bill when compared to incandescent holiday lighting, especially if you're displays are over the top.

To some people, having the best holiday displays in the neighborhood is a part of the holiday experience. I personally appreciate all the hard work people put into beautifying the neighborhoods which boosts the holiday spirit.

LEDs are better for the environment, they run much cooler which reduces fire risk. LED's last longer and could save money eventually. But due to holiday lighting costing a little bit more upfront, it might take more than one holiday season for the savings to kick in. This shouldn't be a problem since they do last longer.

DID YOU KNOW? According to consumerreports.org LEDs only used 1 to 3 kilowatt hours of energy, compared with 12 to 105 kWh for the incandescent bulbs, saving $1 to $11 when comparing 50 feet for 300 hours of LED's vs mini, C7, and C9 bulb types.
