Led Zeppelin ~ '70s Rock

I was a child of the 1970s. Music was extremely varied. From the "Bubblegum" sounds of the Osmonds, Shaun Cassidy and Leif Garrett, I soon moved to the "hard stuff".

By the time I was 11, I had Robert Plant on the back of my bedroom door. It was one of those big posters too! Led Zeppelin was my music candy of choice, with Robert Plant being the "Tootsie Roll" center.

Led Zeppelin was burning up the charts with everything they released. Let's take a look. You are sure to find something you like here!

The Members of Led Zeppelin

Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham made up this group of what would become known as the "Grandfathers of Heavy Metal".

The band was formed in England in 1968 after the Yardbirds played their final gig. Jimmy Page found Robert Plant. Plant then suggested John Bonham on drums. John Paul Jones heard about the open position for a guitarist and contacted Page.

They preferred to develop the concept of "album-oriented rock" so the band did not release the popular songs from their albums as singles in the UK. They did have ten singles that charted in the US, though.

Led Zeppelin ~ Stairway to Heaven

Most of us could "name that tune" in just a few notes. "Stairway to Heaven" is easily one of the most recognizable songs of the 1970's. It has been named "Best Song of All Time" on many charts around the world.

Growing Up with Led Zeppelin

I loved listening to Led Zeppelin. The music was compelling. But the real beauty of it was watching them. In the early days, Robert Plant didn't seem to think much about his onstage presence. His hair was long and bushy and his clothes the kind he would wear everyday on the street.

As you will see in the videos, at some point all that changed. His onstage presence became very different. He became a rocker and wore his shirts open and his jeans tight. His movements became more gyrations than dancing. He became a sex symbol for many women.

As a pre-teen in the 1970's, I was just mesmerized by his hair. I didn't yet see what everyone else was seeing. Oh, but my mother did, I have since been informed. She didn't want me watching Led Zeppelin when they came on TV. I could listen, but watching was not allowed very often, until I got older anyway.

Looking back, I can understand. As an adult woman watching these videos I was amazed at the charisma of this man and the his stage presence. Somehow as a child I missed that completely, which was probably a good thing.

Led Zeppelin ~ Immigrant Song

Even if you don't recognize the name of the "Immigrant Song" you will probably recognize the sound! You can tell in many of the songs penned by Robert Plant that he was greatly influenced by the Norse and Welsh mythology. In the "Immigrant Song" he speaks of the hammer of the gods and Valhalla. His son, Karac, was named after Caratacus, a Welsh warrior.

Led Zeppelin IV

Shown are the four symbols on the label and inside sleeve of Led Zeppelin IV, representing Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, John Bonham, and Robert Plant, in that order.

The fourth album became the bands biggest seller. It was a huge commercial and critical success. Most of the album's songs are staples on classic rock radio stations, including "Black Dog", "Stairway to Heaven", and "Going to California" among other other major hits. The album is one of the best-selling albums in history at 37 million sold. It has shipped over 23 million in the United States alone, putting it third on the all-time list. In 2003, the album was ranked 66th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Jimmy Page explained why they choose the symbols instead of a name for the fourth album. "We decided that on the fourth album, we would deliberately play down the group name, and there wouldn't be any information whatsoever on the outer jacket. Names, titles and things like that do not mean a thing."

Led Zeppelin ~ Black Dog

I could watch this video with the sound turned off! "Black Dog" from Led Zeppelin IV was one of the biggest hits from the album.

30 Years Later

Nearly 30 years after disbanding following John Bonham's sudden death in 1980, the band is still held in high regard for their artistic achievements, commercial success, and broad influence. The band has sold an estimated 200 million albums worldwide, including 111 million in the United States and they have had all of their original studio albums reach the top 10 of the Billboard album chart in the U.S., with six being #1 sellers.

Led Zeppelin are ranked #1 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. Rolling Stone magazine has described Led Zeppelin as "the heaviest band of all time" and "the biggest band of the '70s".

Robert Plant ~ Georgia On My Mind

One of my favorite artists singing about my home state. It's easy to see Plant's perfectionism making the band start over in the middle of the song because someone missed a note.
