The traditional bavarian leather trousers

Tourist - if you come to Germany, you should not wear a Lederhose. If you come to Bavaria, you could wear one. If you go to the Oktoberfest in Munich, you should wear one. But why is it so popular there?

Die Lederhose aus Bayern 

Although traditional leather trousers (= Lederhosen ) are worn all over the alpine region in Europe, like Austria, Switzerland or Tirol, the original Lederhose has become, most of all, a well known symbol for Bavaria (= Bayern) in Germany.
But they are not only a kind of folkloric accessory. For centuries traditional leathertrousers have been an important and hard-wearing garment for the male population there, especially the peasantry or workers.

The Renaissance of the Lederhose 

And today? Farmers and working class in Lederhosen? Oh, no! Lederhosen are popular, they are style, they are fun, they are funky!

Lederhose, Dirndl and Bavaria: Trachten 

Trachten or Trachtenmode is the general German term for traditional bavarian fashion, Lederhosen as well as Dirndls. Of course you can wear a real Lederhose. You better are prepared, before you come to Bayern! But then don´t forget a Dirndl for HER!
