They have been regarded as one of the first heavy metal bands, Rolling Stone magazine called them the heaviest band of all time, but their music really transcended the genres and borders, it could not be chained and confined, they had their own individualistic style.

When Jimmy Page was forming the band, Keith Moon said that it would go over like a lead balloon, and John Entwistle added, "more like a lead zeppelin". Well, they both were proven wrong, however, that's the origin of the band's name; 'a' was dropped from 'lead' to avoid mispronunciation. After the death of John Bonham in 1980 the band broke up but left the legacy that is hard to compare to anything else in the history of rock music.
