General Lee posters, images of a southern gentleman
General Robert E. Lee was the son of a Revolutionary War hero, Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee, and looked up to George Washington as his personal hero. He married Washington's great granddaughter, Mary Custis, and moved into the Arlington House. He was a top graduate of West Point, finishing his student career there with zero demerits. Lincoln asked Lee first to be the head of the Union Army. However, Lee refused because he couldn't fight against his home state of Virginia.
College president until his death
Lee served as the president of what is now Washington and Lee University in Virginia. According to Wikipedia, Lee began an honor system similar to that of West Point, "We have but one rule here, and it is that every student be a gentleman."

Guerrilla Warfare
Lee was well-versed in the history of warfare and knew guerrilla warfare was a possibility. However, he knew how many lives would be lost and was ready to help the south integrate back into the union. John Mosby was a famous colonel who resorted to guerrilla tactics. He is a name on many street signs, monuments, and at least one elementary school.

- I've been to Manassas (Bull Run), Gettysburg and Chickamauga. The last of those is not as famous but in a sense, by winning the battle, the South lost the war. It's the best documented battle site from the war. The national military historical park there is the precursor to the National Park system--a joint effort by survivors of the battle from both sides. I am in awe of those veterans for working together on that.

- I would love to visit some of the Civil War battlefields. I drove close to Gettysburg once and visited Lookout Mountain too, but I really would love to spend time touring the major battlefields and museums.
