It was a pleasant surprise to know that Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging is not just a bunch of flowers but a symphony of flowers with stem, thorns and foliage in a lovely conglomerate of live blooms. Ikebana, the Japanese word symbolizes "living blossoms", and refers to the Japanese traditional method of arranging flowers in aesthetic glory and elegance, a rather distinctive element associated with Japan's culture. The ancient school of thought is believed to have its roots in Ikebana Ikonobo, the founder of contemporary Ikebana. In the ancient period, the prevailing practice of flowers was to place it on altars as offerings to deities. Slowly this brought changes about the arrangement of flower blossoms in creative masterpieces like Ikebana kenzan, designed to stimulate gratifying ideas.
Ikebana grew as the spiritual emotions evoked and the ancient Japanese found a way to express gratitude and honour to spiritual saints who are attributed to the fact that they have abandoned worldly possessions in quest of questions unanswered and live their life for a spiritual purpose. Ikebana closely relates to all things in nature - rocks, buds, flower blooms, trees, water, stem and even sun, earth and wind.
By the 8th century, flowers; usually in combination with poetry - had been an appreciable element of the aesthetic existence of higher class Japanese families. Kakitsubata, a flower used in Ikebana is an ancient Japanese flower that appears in the Japanese literature of 8th century.
By the 16th century, ikebana exhibitions as well as contests institutionalized the art of Ikebana Ikonobo in Japanese culture. Ikebana masters were the primary users and torch bearers of the art of Ikebana from the Japanese community, favored by the Imperial Court, affluent retailers, and royal families. While this particular era influenced the world famous Japanese herbal tea ceremony, the Ikebana craftsmanship added to the precious culture of aesthetics and glory to the Japanese art of floral arranging tradition.
Ikebana can be symbolized to a new oriental style of interior decoration and architectural craftsmanship, which included reed -mat floor surfaces, an alcove that highlighted a hanging scroll and a flower arrangement in tune to the season. This resulted in Ikebana turning out to be an intimate part of the lives of all Japanese.

The Ikebana kenzan is heavily used in Moribana the upright structured design which has the fundamental conglomerate of flowers in not so deep flower vase or a basket. The Moribana floral arrangement is fastened on kenzan which is also called metal flower frog. In the slanting floral arrangement of Moribana, the second free style design, the branches are slanted in rhythm and symmetry which gives a sense of aesthetics and appealing view. Third floral arrangement is the Nageire that does not contain kenzan because the floral arrangement comprises of a single flower.

The most ancient and oldest school of floral arrangement Ikebana in Japan was founded by a Buddhist monk famous as Ikenobo Senno. The tradition of Ikebana Ikonobo has been generously, diligently and cautiously handed over to generations of Japanese community of teachers and monks. At present, this ancient school is present in full glory and headed by the 45th generation Ikebana master Lemoto in the Rokkakudo temple in Kyoto, Japan.
The Buddhist priest of the Rokkakudo Temple in Kyoto was an expert in flower arrangement and other monks sought his help and used his instructions to create the flower arrangements. The Buddhist monk lived by the side of a lake, in Japanese - Ikenobo means lake, subsequently the name Ikenobo got affiliated to the priests who specialized in these floral arrangements.
The dedication of a five hundred year old Ikebana Ikonobo custom has been keenly preserved by the Buddhist monk who had found essential truth and loveliness in the true nature of flowers and plants. The extraordinary luminous creation springs from the heart first and is visualized in the form of Ikebana which is elegant and basked in spiritual splendor.
It keeps the faith and the joy alive, adorning the place where it is kept reminding of spiritual enrichment and power. It is no wonder that students who undergo Ikebana classes become conscious of nature, its softness, delicate beauty in soft flowers and filled with benevolence and spirituality. It is the nature of the plants and the flowers to give and only give without asking anything in return.

As he lived by the side of a lake, for which the Japanese word is Ikenobo, the name Ikenobo became attached to the priests there who specialized in these altar arrangements.
The Buddha instructed a prince in a dream to erect a temple near the pond at the cedar tree under a purple cloud. From that cedar, Rokkakudo temple was built to house a Kannon (Quan-Yin) statue. The spiritual aspect of ikebana is considered very important to its practitioners. Silence is a must during practices of ikebana. It is a time to appreciate things in nature. One becomes more patient & tolerant of differences, not only in nature, but also in general. Ikebana can inspire one to identify with beauty in all art forms. This is also the time when one feels closeness to nature that provides relaxation for the mind, body & soul.

For making an Ikebana Ikonobo flower bouquet, you can firmly hold floral materials upright in place with colored wires or vines in the bamboo baskets, or bend branches appropriately to offer slanted support to them against the wall of the bamboo container. Different-sizes of marbles can be also placed to hold floral materials.
Without water , the floral arrangement Ikebana is ephemeral and will not last longer hence care has to be taken to put freshly cut flowers in transparent glass containers with water , once taken out of water they have to be used in the ikebana.

Japanese vase, dark blue with vertical ribbed texture on the outside and a mottled smooth glazed design inside.
This tall funnel shaped vase measures 9.5 inches tall and 6.5 inches wide.
The base is raised inside the vase (sets down 2 1/2 inches below the rim) so you can set your kenzan on top of it and then arrange your flowers.
You can also remove the raised base for longer stemmed flowers.
