Music-Sharing Conviction Comes with Stiff Penalty

In Duluth, Minn., on Thursday, a federal jury convicted Jammie Thomas for copyright infringement for sharing music online. Thomas is to pay $9,250 for each of the 24 songs involved in the case. Eric Bangeman, who has been covering the trial for the tech Web site Ars Technica, talks with Michele Norris about what the case will mean for future litigation involving file sharing.

Students warned about illegal music, movie downloads

Citing online theft of copyrighted works on campus computer networks as "an enormous problem" for the music community, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) late last month sent letters to 700 colleges across the country stating that students who ignore warnings and continue to engage in illegal downloading of music will be sued.
