California came oh-so-close to legalizing marijuana at the end of 2010 and showed everyone just how close this race really is. The irony: many of the people who voted "No" to legalizing marijuana did so even though they DO want marijuana legalized - they just didn't agree with all of the particulars of the way it was going to be legalized.

Most people are aware by now that Marijuana has a wealth of medical benefits and very few negative side effects. Unlike the vast majority of over-the-counter drugs that are prescribed to help with insomnia, anxiety, nausea, pain, and a slew of other health problems that have awful side effects and are often addictive, Marijuana is far safer and is not addictive at all.

We are making a whole class of criminals out of people who would otherwise be law-abiding citizens simply because this amazing drug is illegal. Children have been taken away from parents who smoke every so often to combat joint pain because they are "dangerous criminals," while other children with alcoholic parents are left alone because alcohol is legal.

I do not currently smoke marijuana, but I used to. I used to wake up nauseous every morning for almost six years straight. Imagine my relief when I discovered that smoking just a tiny little bit in the morning completely eliminated the nausea. I used to not be able to eat breakfast because half the time I would throw it up. I couldn't eat anything until the afternoon. Not only did the marijuana get rid of the nausea the moment I smoked a small amount, but it would help stimulate my appetite and I had absolutely no problem keeping food down. I could go about my day without feeling sick for the first part of it.

I have since stopped having the nausea and no longer smoke, but it got me through some tough times. And no, I never had any problem stopping and I never had "withdrawals." There are a lot of people out there who still suffer from things that marijuana helps tremendously. I am grateful that a lot of them are able to get a medical card and it is legal for them, however in some states and for some people this is unfortunately not an option.

Some people argue with this and say, "Okay, I can see some of the health benefits for people with cancer and such. But there are a lot of people that want it legalized just because they like to smoke it recreationally." This is true, but does this make it wrong? I don't think so.

Alcohol has a laundry list of proven health risks, negative side effects, and issues. Drink too much and you throw up violently, become so inebriated that you will do things that you would never do under normal circumstances, black out and not remember large chunks of time, and wake up with a horrible hangover. Not only that, if you drink too much you can overdose on alcohol and die.

Yet it is legal.

Smoking too much marijuana can perhaps make some people dizzy. That is about the extent of it. You may get "really high" but you are still coherent; you don't lose your sense of judgement and do stupid things. You may have moments where you forget details of things while you are stoned, but when you are sober again you still remember everything that you've done. You don't ever wake up with a hangover in the morning. And you cannot overdose on marijuana.

Yet it is illegal.
