I can see quite well, but I can barely even hit a golf ball! Whitey is an inspiration to us all. :-)

Whitey is truly an inspiration and example of a life well lived, despite having obstacles to overcome. I can see why he is your hero!

This is a truly inspiring story. Goes to show that you can do anything you want - no matter what. I never thought anyone can play golf while being legally blind

What an awesome tribute to your husband, Joan, and to your positive self as well. We can all only hope that we would handle being declared legally blind with the same positive attitude as Whitey. Blessings and a bit o' sunshine for you both.

My grandfather was also an avid golfer and legally blind. He used neon bright golf balls and recruited any of the grandkids that were available to drive the cart and be his spotter. Your lens made me smile through tears- I miss him :)

After reading your well written lens, perhaps I can still improve my golf. It also shows the value and enjoyment sport can bring to our lives.

This is very inspirational to me and I like how he uses his "muscle memory" it really shows how we can use more of our other senses other than sight to achieve what we want to accomplish. Thanks for sharing.
  • davespeed Jan 19, 2012 @ 10:18 pm | delete
Joan, thanks for sharing Whitey's remarkable story. 11 holes-in-one is quite an achievement and for several of them to have been made after Whitey lost his vision is really something else! And It is so cool that he's been to the last 55 Masters. All the best to you and Whitey.
  • JohnWarley Jan 19, 2012 @ 4:07 am | delete
Joan: Had no idea but learned a ton from this. Truly remarkable, and by making Whitey the subject of a Lens you have shared special talents of a clearly special man. I admire any sighted person that can hit a four iron, but legally blind? Wow.
  • batsinthebelfry Jan 16, 2012 @ 6:09 pm | delete
Joan, what a special man and a special life. I'm jealous, a minor leaguer and 55 years at the masters. Life doesn't get any better than that

Thought Whitey might appreciate this? Yesterday at work, the lads and I suddenly noticed a blind woman haring down the road with her white stick. She stopped by us for a long time. Eventually one of the lads asked her if he could help. She wanted to cross the road (normally quiet here), but the sound of the strimmer made it like it was too busy to cross with cars whizzing by. Stop the strimmer was commanded and she quite happily crossed. Unfortunately the lad strimming had left the five litre plastic container with the petrol mix on the road. She bumped into this with her stick, stopped, bent down and in one fluid motion tossed it into the hedge and carried on. It took us about two hours to find it, but we were laughing.

This is an amazing lens. My grandfather was legally blind but this happened when he was much older than your husband. My grandparents did not allow his blindness to interrupt their life. These are only a few of the things he continued to do but are worth mentioning, he still danced, listened to television and yes, with the help of my grandmother he drove their car. We did not know that he was driving but when my parents went for a visit he wanted to drive them to dinner. My mother asked if he had been driving and my grandmother responded, "Of course, I tell him when he needs to do something." My mother convinced them that they needed to stop driving and move closer to us. My grandparents are no longer with us and we now can laugh about this situation. Some people have the strength to go on no matter what obstacles come their way.

What an inspiring lens from a highly decorated, top Lensmaster. Thanks Joan for sharing this very personal story about your husband's golfing as a legally blind person. • LaraineRose Jul 31, 2009 @ 5:54 pm | delete
Well deserving of a purple star! When I was a child I had fear of going blind. Mum wondered what I was doing when I blind folded myself or sat in the dark playing the piano. I played by "ear." I just told her, "Practicing." It was a while before I told her that I was practicing so that I could play the piano if/when I became blind. I still have fairly good vision. I know that the blind don't necessarily want or need our sympathy, but my heart still goes out to them. 5*s from a sister Senior Squid.

Wow! My mother (84) has macular degeneration and she still mows her (large) lawn, a few missed bits! She keeps house and is still staunchly independent as she has ever been. My 95 years old aunt has that too, and she can't recognise faces, so you have to tell her who's speaking. She loves to hear me sing.

Joan, Thanks for this 5* lens. As someone who IS in fact, legally blind, I can certainly relate. So please give Whitey a high five for me. I was born with an eye disease known as Familial Exudative Vitreoretinopathy; FEVR for short. Some "fun facts" about FEVR: It's a hereditary disease of the retina, no known cure but research was initiated a few years ago. A person can have FEVR and be symptom-free or, with various levels of severity. Fortunately, I have vision corrected to 20/200 on the left eye and 20/400 on the right. Unfortunately, that's not good enough to pass an eye test for a driver's license... bummer, but I've driven a few golf balls in my day :-) My standard joke is, "I'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other." But life is good and somehow I've muttled through 50 years with this thing. Thanks too because this lens serves as a reminder that whatever challenges we are presented in life, we can overcome (or help someone else overcome) the obstacles. -- Chuck

I really enjoyed your lens. It gave me a warm glow and I hope Whitey continues to play for many years to come. I noticed you mentioned he maybe returning to Scotland next year. I live in Aberdeen - Scotland and it's a wonderful place. I would recommend a round at Newmacher Golf Course. They have two courses, Hawkshill & Swailend. The Hawkshill course opened in 1990 and was designed by Dave Thomas. I would recomend this course as it's got everything you could wish for, a really lovely course. The swailend course is a lot newer and still needs time to develop. Even if Whitey can't make a round at the course, Aberdeen is a lovely place to visit for the day and is only 1hr 30 mins drive/train from Carnoustie.

Anyway, keep the golf going it's a wonderful sport and leisure activity.

    Joan and Whitey -

WOW! What a lens! And what an amazing tribute to an apparently amazing man.

Joan, THANK YOU for letting me know about this lens. I was in the golf business for years and I have seen some amazing things. Many people see the challenges that life throws at us a road blocks.... and then there are the special ones that view them as speed bumps. I love reading and learning about people that handle the bumps with such grace and dignity (yes, that means YOU, Whitey!)

I do have to comment on this part, though...

TEN Holes-In-One? Really?!?!?! Y'all wouldn't be pulling my leg, now would you? I've had ONE (I think they coulda heard me scream all the way on Alaska!)

BTW, my hubby and I were at The Masters this year and two years ago. It is an amazing place to be... feels like walking on hallowed ground.

Again, my hat is off to both of you. I know there is a WONDERFUL woman standing next to this AMAZING man!

    All the best!!!

    Jennifer

I don't even like golf -- but I liked this inspirational story. We get taken down by the beatings of life -- by this story, your husband was beaten upon but not beat. His ability to overcome his, in our perception, limitation is amazing. Best to you and your family.
  • Amanda_Blue Jul 15, 2008 @ 9:12 pm | delete
There is a book entitled Zen in the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigel which gives true acounts of Zen archers who can hit the target blind-folded or with their backs to it, after many years of practice. There's is not muscle memory but rather a feeling of at-oneness with the target, still they remind me of your husband. Wonderful lens. 5 *

The stories are true. I have been a part of many
of them. For about 47 years it has been a ficticious /non-ficticious trip with Whitey as a dear friend. I have never been around anyone who has come to know him that was not richer for the experience.God made him to brighten the lives of those with whom he comes in contact.

    Your friend, Big Red
