It's not a killer.
There are far more dangerous, lethal and addictive drugs that pose a much greater risk to our lives and safety—and those of our loved ones—that should be focused on and eliminated from the community.

The "crime"

The other 12% (over 88K Americans) were for "sale" or "manufacture", which includes marijuana grown for personal use or purely medical purposes.
These FBI stats indicate that in America, one marijuana user is arrested every 45 seconds.
The total number of 2000 marijuana arrests easily exceeded the number of arrests for violent crimes, including murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault COMBINED.

I DON'T PARTAKE.
I'll take a drug test any day of the week. I have no interest in legalizing marijuana for my own use.
I do have family members who used marijuana medicinally, if illegally, for relief from chronic pain and the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation.
They are deceased now.
But I would not have wanted them imprisoned for responsible home use of the drug.
YOUR TURN!
Decriminalize marijuana?

Yes, make it legal!
srioschavez says:
if it grows on the earth naturally then i dont see how our government should have the right to tell us what we can do with it period. There are manufactured drugs that are given by doctors that have worse side effects than marijuana. There have been several people that i know that were dying and this drug made the pain easier.
Ivan L Fail says:
Dear Congressman Billy Long:
I am a retired Federal Correctional Officer, political conservative -, and an over taxed, tax payer who has ?never smoked a joint?. I am requesting that you support Congressmen Ron Paul and Barney Frank's wise and courageous action of introducing and promoting legislation to "de-criminal-ize" the possession and use of marijuana. I suspect that both the ?Bible Belt tobacco? industry and the booze industry ?competitors for the addict's dollar? will continue to covertly lobby, ?pull all the political strings" and churn out all the propaganda that they can to sabotage that legislation. But if it passes you can bet your Congressional pension that the tobacco and the booze industries will "switch religion" and go to war over the right to ?corner the market? on growing and selling pot. The traditional motives of both industries in their "competition for the addict's dollar" speak for themselves".
It is even possible that the Drug Cartel itself which has unlimited resources and a compelling vested interest in keeping Pot illegal ---, has managed to ?launder PAC money into the pockets of corrupt but well camouflaged lobbyists to lobby against legalizing the possession and use of pot. ?Follow the money trail? ---, if you can.
By taking this courageous step Congressmen Ron Paul and Barney Frank have just sent ?shock waves? throughout the Mexican Drug Cartel and an army of ?street thug dealers in America?. They have also taken an important step toward drastically reducing the horrific expense of monitoring, arresting, prosecuting, incarcerating and caring for thousands of Americans whose primary crime is possessing, using, selling and/or growing marijuana --, which grows wild in many places. The "war on marijuana" and on those who grow it for their own use has been a tax squandering societal disaster of monstrous proportions, (a carbon copy of Prohibition which financed organized crime's rise to power in America). In order to deny the Drug Cartel a market for pot --, "pot heads" must also be legally permitted to grow enough for their own use only.
There are many other reasons why the courageous and far sighted action that Congressmen Paul and Frank have taken in introducing and promoting this legislation is a ?win for all Americans? but I have listed the most important ones.
I am sure that the Bible Belt Tobacco industry and the booze industry are already mapping alternate strategy to add pot to their ?product inventory? if and when it is ?de-criminalized?. That is is the only reason the industry would surrender to or support this reform proposal. And another reason to let "users grow their own weed". The booze and tobacco industries are already as big and as powerful as they need to be
But there is one other "PAC Money Powerhouse" profession whose political clout ----, and massive monetary incentive for propagandizing and lobbying against marijuana law reform rivals or exceeds that that of the booze and tobacco industry. That profession is of course the American Trial Lawyers Association. This Association's "vested interest" in retaining marijuana production, possession and use as a "Cash Cow Crime" is mind boggling. That alone is enough reason to support the reform legislation introduced by Congressmen Ron Paul and Barney Frank. Please support this legislation.?
Respectfully,

Personally I believe in freedom. In other words if somebody wants to get stoned thats their business.. As a health freak and fitness guru I judge the daily intake of junk food, coffee, soda pops and lying on the couch as more harmful than weed.
Paula says:
Noelle.. marijuana is NOT CHEMICALLY addictive.. a person may use marijuana on a daily basis.. like a habit. When it comes to being addictive like cigarretts.. it is not the same at all!

Stop trying to push the scrips for the little addictive happy pill that can lead to thoughts of suicide.....a little pot never killed anyone ...natural is the way to go....forget the synthetic crap

Using marajuana for recreational purposes is a personal choice and as long as it is being done in the privacy of someone's home I don't understand why it should be a big problem. I say make it legal and regulate it. I personally do not smoke but if we cant afford to hold criminals in jail for serious offenses why take up the space with people that are just simply smoking it or possesing it. Save the government money and help the government make money. Marajuana isnt going anywhere so lets be smart. I am all for it just dont abuse it!!!!

Decriminalize marijuana and draw more attention to the negative effects of alcohol use.
c21scottm says:
If we decriminalize it will still be a "black market" product. There will still be active marijuana arrest and violence to control market. We need to legalize and regulate just like alcohal and tobacco. It is easier for kids to get weed from drug dealers than it is for them to get alcohal and tobacco from stores. Dealers don't care about age unlike most retailers.
Amanda says:
Definatly,

Legalize it, right on. new fav lens and rated 5 stars.

No way, potheads!

prescription drugs
Ahmer says:
i really don't care as long as i healthy!
Noelle says:
Growing Marijuana for medical use is a load of crap because if someone truly needed the CHEMICAL that is IN marijuana, a doctor would persctibe them a capsule with the actual chemical in it to avoid addiction.
So smoking it is not only unnecessary, but avoidable.

UNDERSTANDING MARIJUANA
Understanding Marijuana: A New Look at the Scientific Evidence
Amazon Price: $20.04 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Marijuana is the world's most popular illicit drug, with hundreds of millions of regular users worldwide. One in three Americans has smoked pot at least once. The Drug Enforcement Agency estimates that Americans smoke five million pounds of marijuana each year. And yet marijuana remains largely misunderstood by both its advocates and its detractors. To some, marijuana is an insidious "stepping-stone" drug, enticing the inexperienced and paving the way to the inevitable abuse of harder drugs. To others, medical marijuana is an organic means of easing the discomfort or stimulating the appetite of the gravely ill. Others still view marijuana, like alcohol, as a largely harmless indulgence, dangerous only when used immoderately. All sides of the debate have appropriated the scientific evidence on marijuana to satisfy their claims. What then are we to make of these conflicting portrayals of a drug with historical origins dating back to 8,000 B.C.?
Understanding Marijuana examines the biological, psychological, and societal impact of this controversial substance. What are the effects, for mind and body, of long-term use? Are smokers of marijuana more likely than non-users to abuse cocaine and heroine? What effect has the increasing potency of marijuana in recent years had on users and on use? Does our current legal policy toward marijuana make sense? Earleywine separates science from opinion to show how marijuana defies easy dichotomies. Tracing the medical and political debates surrounding marijuana in a balanced, objective fashion, this book will be the definitive primer on our most controversial and widely used illicit substance. Grows like a, ahem, weed
Need another reason?
I don't want MY kids smoking pot.
I talk to my kids about smoking. They don't want to do it.
They've watched so many people try to quit cigarettes; they know the lung cancer risks.
I do, however, believe that money and manpower would be better spent on relieving the world of meth. Neighborhood meth labs are a dangerous combination of toxic chemicals, and many times a bust reveals that young children lived in the same house.
Have you seen Faces of Meth? Those images will burn themselves into your brain.
Drunk drivers are still killing people. Repeat offenders, in startling numbers, are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocent pedestrians, drivers and passengers on the road.
Here's an idea: use our law-enforcement resources to combat this proven deadly threat. I don't hear anything about an epidemic of potheads causing traffic accidents with multiple fatalities.
