It's not a killer.
There are far more dangerous, lethal and addictive drugs that pose a much greater risk to our lives and safety—and those of our loved ones—that should be focused on and eliminated from the community.

The "crime"

The other 12% (over 88K Americans) were for "sale" or "manufacture", which includes marijuana grown for personal use or purely medical purposes.
These FBI stats indicate that in America, one marijuana user is arrested every 45 seconds.
The total number of 2000 marijuana arrests easily exceeded the number of arrests for violent crimes, including murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault COMBINED.

I DON'T PARTAKE.
I'll take a drug test any day of the week. I have no interest in legalizing marijuana for my own use.
I do have family members who used marijuana medicinally, if illegally, for relief from chronic pain and the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation.
They are deceased now.
But I would not have wanted them imprisoned for responsible home use of the drug.
YOUR TURN!

Pot is the least of our worries! Alcohol is far more dangerous!

Amphisbaena says:
There are multiple active ingredients in the Cannabis plant other than THC. The pills that Noelle mention are often far less effective than smoking the plant. Also a vaporizer will eliminate nearly all harmful effects that smoking the plant cause.
The punishment for a crime should never cause more harm than the crime itself. Sending a pothead to prison always causes more harm to that person and the people in their life than letting them smoke responsibly as we allow responsible drinking.

I think marijuana is less addictive and less harmful than nicotine and alcohol. (And we all know how well Prohibition worked!)

RolandTumble says:
Legalize it! While there are some harmful effects--mostly related to the process of smoking anything--marijuana is relatively benign compared to, say alcohol and tobacco (which are legal), or heroin, meth and crack cocaine.
As a separate but related issue, industrial hemp should _absolutely_ be decriminalized. Yes, both plants are Cannabis Sativa--but Great Danes and Toy Poodles are both Canis Domesticus....

Noelle, your post makes little sense. No one's overly worried about the fact that you smoke weed, cus you can ingest it through other forms too (cooking, vaporizing, drinking). It's the sheer fact that THC is being ingested. So your solution of just capsulizing THC doesn't really do your side any good, the swallower of said capsule would still get high.

Stoners are not criminals. The only crime is the suppression of our freedom from something that doesn't kill you (unlike Tobacco & Alcohol) Only the The Mafia (And I mean those in gov't too) profit from it being illegal. Money Corrupts - Not weed! Write your congressmen today. Fill up our prisons- They can't put us all in jail. Smoke openly and never pay a fine - do the time. You can get it in jail too!

Hey Noelle: Pot is not addictive. And yes, there are oral sprays like Sativex in Canada which I would take in an INSTANT for my multiple sclerosis symptoms. I don't smoke pot because I am asthmatic and the smoke is too invasive for me. It it wasn't, I'd be riding the train for some relief. Instead, I have a pillbox with opiates, muscle relaxers, anti-epileptics and others. People with MS and cancer (and other diseases) should have free access.

I will say this once again... PEOPLE DO YOUR RESEARCH and find out for yourself, WHY marijuana is illegal ? the real reason behind it has nothing to do with your "health" .... $$$ ... That is only what the propaganda wants you to believe...

I have personal proof that marijuana can help relieve the pain of end-stage cancer.........when all other drugs could not help, including morphine. Thank God, at that time in life, the hospital also recognized it's ability, and permitted my cousin to use it before she died.

There are good, well-meaning people that are still being imprisioned for growing medical marijuana. The records get some-how 'lost' from the police as to their tactics and harassment. Of course, they confiscate all the marijuana.

It seems a bit silly that tobacco and whiskey are legal but weed is not. It is far from silly when you hear about someone getting 5 years for possession and someone else getting 10 months for child sexual contact. Where are our priorities?

No way, potheads!
Noelle says:
Growing Marijuana for medical use is a load of crap because if someone truly needed the CHEMICAL that is IN marijuana, a doctor would persctibe them a capsule with the actual chemical in it to avoid addiction.
So smoking it is not only unnecessary, but avoidable.

UNDERSTANDING MARIJUANA
Understanding Marijuana: A New Look at the Scientific Evidence
Amazon Price: $16.10 (as of 12/25/2009)![]()
Marijuana is the world's most popular illicit drug, with hundreds of millions of regular users worldwide. One in three Americans has smoked pot at least once. The Drug Enforcement Agency estimates that Americans smoke five million pounds of marijuana each year. And yet marijuana remains largely misunderstood by both its advocates and its detractors. To some, marijuana is an insidious "stepping-stone" drug, enticing the inexperienced and paving the way to the inevitable abuse of harder drugs. To others, medical marijuana is an organic means of easing the discomfort or stimulating the appetite of the gravely ill. Others still view marijuana, like alcohol, as a largely harmless indulgence, dangerous only when used immoderately. All sides of the debate have appropriated the scientific evidence on marijuana to satisfy their claims. What then are we to make of these conflicting portrayals of a drug with historical origins dating back to 8,000 B.C.?
Understanding Marijuana examines the biological, psychological, and societal impact of this controversial substance. What are the effects, for mind and body, of long-term use? Are smokers of marijuana more likely than non-users to abuse cocaine and heroine? What effect has the increasing potency of marijuana in recent years had on users and on use? Does our current legal policy toward marijuana make sense? Earleywine separates science from opinion to show how marijuana defies easy dichotomies. Tracing the medical and political debates surrounding marijuana in a balanced, objective fashion, this book will be the definitive primer on our most controversial and widely used illicit substance. Grows like a, ahem, weed
Need another reason?
I don't want MY kids smoking pot.
I talk to my kids about smoking. They don't want to do it.
They've watched so many people try to quit cigarettes; they know the lung cancer risks.
I do, however, believe that money and manpower would be better spent on relieving the world of meth. Neighborhood meth labs are a dangerous combination of toxic chemicals, and many times a bust reveals that young children lived in the same house.
Have you seen Faces of Meth? Those images will burn themselves into your brain.
Drunk drivers are still killing people. Repeat offenders, in startling numbers, are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocent pedestrians, drivers and passengers on the road.
Here's an idea: use our law-enforcement resources to combat this proven deadly threat. I don't hear anything about an epidemic of potheads causing traffic accidents with multiple fatalities.
