What is Pay Per Click?

A quick overview.

Pay Per Click advertising has revolutionized many businesses in the last decade and changed internet search drastically yet many still do not know exactly what it is and how it works. The concept is quite simple but the strategy behind it can be very complex.

On every page of Google and Yahoo search results you see "PPC.", Pay per click ads appear based on the context of what you're doing. Search for "child support guidelines" on Google and you'll find plenty of information about how child support is calculated. But look over at the ads and you'll see that many of them belong to legal directories or law firms. Due to the past success of the Yellow Pages, these firms realize that the very best way to reach prospective clients is to find them at the same moment people are looking for them.

Pay per click is the alternative to firms that go maliciously seeking out clients facing legal problems and instead wait for the clients to come looking for them. For instance television advertising which has given personal injury attorneys the name "ambulance chasers."

The most appealing feature of pay per click is in it's name, you only pay if your ad receives clicks. Forget the days of signing a contract for thousands of dollars to wait it out and see if your firm gets calls from the Yellow Pages and too bad if it doesn't you still signed the contract and your ad is in the book until next year. This is probably the number one reason why the Yellow Page directories are loosing more and more clients every year.

Pay Per Click is based off of a bidding system. Depending on what you think a lead is worth you determine what you will pay for someone who clicks on your ad. If you have the highest bid and your ad receives lots of clicks you get the number one placement. The other great thing about pay per click is you can set a daily budget so when your campaigns meet their budget your ads do not show again until the next day.

Sound simple enough? It is simple to understand however you need someone who is experienced with Google Adwords and Yahoo to set up your campaigns correctly and maintain them on a regular basis. I will warn that there are several companies out there who provide this service and will set up their clients campaigns to receive the most clicks whether relevant to the company or not. Many companies will charge based on a percentage of what you spend every month. Companies that charge this way obviously want you to spend as much money as possible instead of using keywords that produce conversions.

I'm happy to answer any questions you may have regarding ppc and marketing so feel free to ask.
