Game Starting Secrets and Hints for Legends of Karinth

How to Start, Survive and Succeed at Legends of Karinth
MUDs are a type of game that has been around since before the advent of the Internet as we know it now. Some were run on BBS (bulletin board systems), a few of the earliest ones were played by emailing moves and actions back and forth - although this is considered pretty primitive by today's standards, it worked!
You will want the complete Legends of Karinth website and guides open in a handy window, and use this lens to grab some early hints and secrets to getting started. Lots of assistance from players and staff and the helpfile system is available inside the game as well!
Oh, did I mention, it's free to play? No charge, gratis, no fees, no hidden subscriptions, never a dime.
NOW on a vastly faster server - no more big lags during tense combat!
Get Connected
You can connect to LoK (or almost any MU*) with the telnet built into your computer's software. A lot of people do, when they first start playing MUDs or are just looking around. You'll get a tiny window - just enough to see 20 lines or so, and often you can't see what you're typing.Best bet: Find a MUD client for your computer type. MudMagic has free clients for both Windows and Mac machines.
The address for LoK is: karinth.com port 2345
In your MUD client setup, enter karinth.com is the destination, and 2345 as the port. Some clients will let you save these settings to use again.
Here's a list of many more MUD clients you might want to try.
Make a Character
Are you a marauding orc or a giant or a human or..?
Getting started is pretty easy!Pick a name (read the naming rules).
Pick a starting stance or magic (all this can be changed once you're into the game).
Pick a race (there are several to choose from, and each one has its benefits and drawbacks).
Select your physical appearance items like hair, build, skin color (this can be changed later with quest points).
Set your age (you can advance it in the game later but not reverse it).
Type DONE and watch the introduction!
Read a Bit
Tons to read, but not all is necessary to start...
MUD! Can't ever have too much MUD.
Playing Muds on the Internet
MUDs (Multi-User Dimensions or Multi-User Dungeons, depending on who you ask) are Internet-based role-playing games that allow you to join players from around the world anytime. If that appeals to you, here's the book to get you started. While it concentrates primarily on adventure/action games, it also contains information on the growing number of socially-oriented games, where interaction among players is more important than slashing monsters. The authors show you where to find games, how to join them and share valuable strategies.

Starting Out
Where you start to find out who you are...
The very first thing to do is wear your gear. Wear all will place everything where it belongs. There is much more gear to be found in the game, including the starting house, which is where you begin.Well, actually, where you begin is right outside the house on the road to the south. When you move north, you will be greeted by the first real mob (mobile, not a player), Alistair Moffatt. He'll give you some advice and send you on your way.
Let's pause a moment and cover some important things.
Many MUDs have classes you can choose from when you begin. LoK has no classes. You develop your own strategy, change it as you decide to change it, and make your own decisions.
You can change this strategy at any time, for free up until level 21, and with quest points afterward.
Want to be a warrior but still cast a few spells? Quite possible.
Want to be a mage but still fight with a sword? Absolutely.
Want to be a social butterfly and sit around Portsmouth all your life, talking to people and inciting conflict? You bet. You will get experience (aka EXP) by doing that if you choose.
The sky is literally the limit, and even that limit is flexible.
But.. mage or warrior or social butterfly or explorer or journalist or bard or future kingdom leader.. the starting place is the same: the House.
In the House are trainers for the first few degrees of nearly every skill in the game. Stances, styles, magic of all elements, stealth, supportive skills, weapon skills. It's all there.
Also in the house are two Untrainers - one will untrain individual skills, spellcrafts and abilities, and the other will untrain everything at once. You get your training hours back either way, so you can choose other skills, spellcrafts and abilities to study.
Decisions, Decisions
Too many choices? Analysis Paralysis setting in? ASK!
When you first start out, it may seem overwhelming. There are so many things to do, things to train, things to read.Don't feel alone. Almost everyone, novice player and MUD expert alike, goes through this. Take a deep breath and read help basic skills. This helpfile will give you some guidance on how to avoid the traps most people fall into.
You can train many skills and spellcrafts in the house. Here's a list of the trainers and what they offer.
Pick a few skills (remember that helpfile!) and find the trainers who offer what you need. You can train up to 30 degrees in skills and spellcrafts in the house, and up to 60 degrees in Portsmouth (the city that the house is attached to).
Training up to 360 degrees is available out in the rest of the world. Don't rush; you'll find quite a few of those trainers in good time.
Want a list of ALL the skills, spellcrafts and abilities? Here it is. Please don't try to train them all at once!
You get more training hours each time you level
Let's Talk Magic Spells
Not what you think or may be used to
There are no spells in Karinth. You write your own, the way you want them to work, with the name you want to use, with the targets you want to use.1 - Learn a spellcraft from a trainer.
2 - Scribe a spell using that spellcraft.
3 - Type spell to see your spellbook.
4 - When needed, cast the spell (c firedemon orc foreman - no quotes needed).
Simple, no?
Type help spell writing process to see all the steps of the scribing and use, and things to think about.
Ok, maybe not so simple..
You do have to keep in mind how much of the spellcraft you know, because that will limit how powerful your spells can be.
You do need to learn which spells can be cast on what - self, target (mob or player), objects, area (rooms), etc. The scribe will let you know what's available for the spellcraft you choose.
You do need to know that, while you can scribe multiple spellcrafts into a single spell, there are delays and strength penalties built in as a result.
If you scribe something and decide you don't want to use it, type spell to find the spell's number in your spellbook, and forget (that spell number) to erase it.
You can scribe many spells and have a very full spellbook. There are limits, of course, based on your Mental Capacity, which you can train as an ability.
Leveling? Experience?
What does this all mean?
You gain levels gaining experience. You gain experience by killing mobs (some call them NPCs or mobiles or critters), by roleplaying with other players (type RPSET to turn on roleplaying mode), by searching for and touching Explorer Stones, or by making journals and journaling mobs and objects. It's your choice - pick one path or combine several. Roleplay entirely - roleplay and combat - nothing but combat - roleplay, combat and journaling - combat, journaling, stones - any combination that works for you. It is entirely up to you and your strategy.
Here is one approach to starting out.
There are 100 levels and no two people take the same exact route to get through them.
