What's in the LEGO Pet Shop set?
This is a real multi-purpose pair of buildings, which can be kept together or used separately in your LEGO City layout.The pet shop itself has a store on the ground floor, with pets for sale (dog, cat, parrots, and a fish tank with fish!) as well as pet toys and accessories. Upstairs there's a small apartment with a kitchen and a sleeping loft with a skylight.
The second building is a townhouse with a wonderful bay window on the front, and a fully detailed interior with a spiral staircase, french doors onto the front balcony, and a roof garden at the back where your minifigs can grow their own vegetables! Even your LEGO city can be green! There's even access to the basement crawl space.
These two "modular" buildings match the other current buildings in the series, 10197 Fire Brigade and 10211 Grand Emporium sets, and the older buildings as well - Cafe Corner, Market Street, and the Green Grocer.
While this set is marked as suitable for ages 16+, and is targeted at older teens and adults who love the highly detailed and accurate, but perhaps less playable, aspects of this style, a younger builder with a parent prepared to help out with the tricky bits could have a blast building the Pet Shop.
LEGO Pet Shop construction details
There are many interesting details about the construction of the pet shop and the townhouse.
First, the colors: the pet shop itself features a lot of the grey-blue color that LEGO calls "sand-blue" (for some reason probably to do with Danish-English translation). This looks great and very realistic.
Construction and display details for the pet store include a sidewalk display of pet food, nice lighting details, a very clever "PETS" store sign built using "SNOT" (Studs Not On Top) techniques from LEGO pieces, not a sticker, and some cute flowery window boxes. Inside, the stairs and railing for the sleeping loft are very elegantly done.
The townhouse has a very nice bay window, particularly the quarter-sphere base that it sits on. The technique used to form the angled bay window itself (using 1x4 plate hinges) is one I used back in 1999 on my Victorian House model, and used by other folks around the same time as well. The sloped railings for the front steps are a nice touch too, as well as the cute porch roof over the back stairs and the much fancier porch roof over the front door.
