Lego Trains - Toy Story, Harry Potter, Lego City and Many More...

Lego Trains come in many forms - Toy Story trains, Lego City trains, Harry Potter Trains and much more. We have been searching the lego trains for sale to see which one to buy for our boys and I decided while I was at it, to create this lens and put together all the lego trains available - there sure is a lot to choose from. A lot more than I first thought and I would be surprised if you didn't see a few here that you didn't know existed too.

Lego Trains have been around for years and many adults collect them too. There are even clubs around the world for collectors and also conventions and train shows. Whilst looking around at what lego trains are available I have come to understand how a person could easily become a collector. There are remote controlled trains which I know would be a favourite for my boys. The sets can be added to with tracks and motors. There really is a whole world of Lego Trains out there, so come with me and take a look. Let's choo choo (get it?) along and take a look at the lego trains available....

What Buyers are Saying on Amazon...

We just got this toy for my 7 year old's birthday and I was a little skeptical because the price was a little steep - I have to say it was totally worth it. This train is awesome. From the easy way that it moves when he drives it to all of the little details that they put into making this a wonderful piece of Harry Potter memorabilia.

I love all of the little details like the wand boxes, the chocolate frog on the trolley and Luna Lovegood's glasses - they are great! My child has had hours of fun with this toy already and there are many more hours of fun to come.

To anyone deciding to buy this I would definitely recommend it. It is a wonderful piece of Lego that is only going to gain in value over time - especially considering what the Hogwarts Express that came out a while ago costs now.

I also love the car. The blue Ford Anglia is awesome! With all of the little pieces that go into building it, it truly looks like the original in the movie.

Love, Love, Love this set- you can't go wrong!

Our grandson has just started reading Harry Potter books, so he wanted this lego set for his birthday.
He put it together in two evenings--which we thought was rather fast. We were hoping it would keep him busy for longer than that given the $79.00 price tag. But, it was what he wanted, and he was happy.

What Buyers are Saying on Amazon

I've played with & collected LEGO sets my entire life, and this is the finest looking train set that LEGO has ever produced, especially if you're a fan of steam trains. The main reason for this is that the Emerald Night is the first set that includes the new, larger drive wheels and a moving connecting rod setup, resulting in a more accurate steam train look both for static display and when the train is running. The design is very clean and smooth, with minimal exposed brick lugs, and it comes in a perfect color scheme. It looks more like a model train and less like a child's toy than any previous LEGO train. That said, any child capable of building other complex LEGO sets should be able to handle this one, and will find ample play value in the included minifigures and doors/hatches/roofs that open to expose interiors and little details. Like any other LEGO, pieces can and will fall off with rough handling and play, but since it's LEGO, everything can just snap back together.

It remains to be seen if LEGO's Power Functions (PF) electrical system is a winner or not, but it's now the only option LEGO provides to power this train, so there's not much to debate. It is nice to have wireless control and non-electrified tracks, and the rechargable battery life is quite respectable. On the negative side, there are very obvious digital "steps" in the speed control, rather than a smooth curve from "stop" to "maximum speed". Care is also needed when assembling the model to ensure that the wheel linkages and gear system do not bind and prevent smooth running. As other reviewers have already stated, the electrical parts and track that go along with this set are NOT included, but are needed to really finish this set off. So expect to spend another $100 or so to have something you/your child can run around the Christmas tree or playroom; believe me, they(you)'ll want to.

Our 6 1/2-year old son insisted on this from Santa this year. He has enjoyed it quite a lot and plays with it with the Lego track we bought. We did not get the moters for it and these do not come with it. Maybe we will upgrade to a moter, but he likes it fine right now without it. He was able to put together a lot of the engine and almost all the coal car and coach by himself. So, I think if you are getting this for a "lego-experienced" child, you can go younger than the age on the box.

Toy Story Great Western Lego Train Reviews...

What Buyers are Saying on Amazon

This is a five star train for kids in the 5 to 8 year old range. Older kids may be more interested in the City line trains (7938 and 7939) or the Harry Potter Hogwart's Express train (4841). The City trains, incidentally, are the only ones that come as complete sets with track, motors and remote control devices.

Wow, this is a good looking train! I believe that the photos and box art for the set don't do justice to how it looks when it is built, and how much fun it is to play with. This is an Old West 4-4-0 steam engine, box car, passenger car, and caboose. I would describe the design as more cartoon-like than realistic, with the engine having exaggerated proportions and the cars a tad short. The set includes no track or motor. It is designed as a push train. The engine uses four new drivers (and comes with two extra un-flanged drivers) as well as a cattle-catcher (a new part). The train cars themselves are short but attractively designed. As with the other new trains for 2010, this set is largely brick-built (i.e., few specialized plastic moldings). The set includes Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Bullseye, Rex, and Evil Doctor Pork Chops mini-figures. The passenger car and the caboose are designed with lift-off tops to make it easier to place characters inside, and the box car has a trap door in the roof. The caboose and the passenger car also have doors at each end, but the caboose doors don't open all the way because of the railing. And I find that the engine is not as sturdy as I would like (e.g., the piston cylinders can pivot out of the proper orientation, the cattle catcher comes off when the kids hit objects -- as they are wont to do). The train is not a difficult build, but younger children will likely need some assistance.

Regarding adding a motor, it is possible to use Lego's Power Function (PF) accessories to add one. The easiest way is power the drivers with a motor, place an IR receiver (#8884) in the engine cab, and a battery in the box car. The best motor to use is one that is forthcoming (it is like 8866, but the extension is hard-wired to it -- I will update when it is available). There are two batteries available right now, an expensive rechargeable (which requires a separate wall wart) and an inexpensive AA battery box that does not quite fit in the box car. There will be a new battery box using AAA batteries on the market at some point (same size as the rechargeable); like the new motor, it is included in the new City line trains. And then you would need an IR control pad (#8879). If you are going to this much trouble, it makes sense to build a tender and put both the motor and battery box in it. This engine deserves a tender, and the tender's wheels are a more appropriate size for the motor (the engine's drivers are a tad large). Wheels, coupling magnets and bricks can be had, piece-by-piece, directly from Lego. Obviously, motorization is really a project for tinkerers, but isn't that what Lego is about?

Though train buffs will likely be put-off by the design, this set is going to be very, very popular among children. Grandparents, I think this makes a perfect birthday or holiday gift. I do recommend buying track; the engine's wheels are on two bogies, so the whole thing can get a little sideways without it. You need at least two sets of Lego 7896, though consider getting three sets of 7896 and one set of switches (7895). If you want to add additional old west structures, you can add 7594, Woody's Roundup (which is a scene in Toy Story 2, not 3).

Like most other LEGO sets, this is a high-quality toy that will probably last forever. LEGO sets are definitely worth the money, because kids get countless hours of enjoyment from them. Being able to put a toy together without having to actually read instructions is so refreshing, and the illustrations that show how to build the toy are, for the most part, simple to understand. This Toy Story Western Train Chase set is great, with four colorful train cars and six Toy Story figures. The perfect gift for any kid who's into LEGO and/or Toy Story!

Lego City Train 7938 Reviews

What Buyers on Amazon are Saying...

This train is great. Many improvements were made to this train. The windows were made bigger. The motor is stronger. There are not as many large molded parts either, which do not fit as well as bricks or smaller molded parts. This train uses the power functions system, and it is all quality stuff. The battery box takes 6 AAA batteries, which last for about 4 hours, just like the older train's batteries. You can also order a rechargeable battery box for it. It sure goes fast, so fast that it can fly off the tracks, but it is so strongly built that it survived 3 crashes onto a concrete floor, and it still looks great. I do not recommend going above speed #5 until the batteries are worn down, but it may vary on different track layouts. So, go ahead and but this train versus the older train, because you will get a lot of enjoyement out of it. The only bad thing is the flexible tracks, and the train cannot grip them that well due to the gaps in the "rails" of the tracks, which the train rides on. It is fine on the straight and curved tracks, and I am sure it is good on the switch tracks and rail crossing. The design is attractive, a stylish red, white, and black.

If you are comparing the various Lego trains out there, you may have noticed that I am the same nut-job parent reviewing some of the other trains. So yes, I am partial to Lego trains. But I'll still try to give you a good review.

This is Lego's lower priced starter set introduced in June of 2010. The train is a red and white, three-car, double-ended electric passenger train with three mini-figures and a small station platform. The passenger sections are modestly furnished and can be accessed via removable tops. The train is attractively designed and represents a good improvement over the set it replaces (7897). The set is more "brick-built" with fewer specialized moldings than the prior set. And it incorporates Lego's latest remote control and motor offerings. The set includes 16 pieces of curved track (which makes a circle) and 16 pieces of flex track (turning the circle into a small oval). It also has the necessary Power Functions accessories (motor, infrared control, and battery box). The battery box is a new part and holds six AAA batteries; the remote holds three more. If you don't like changing out AAAs, you can opt for the more expensive lithium-ion battery and DC charger available directly from Lego (this is what we have done, and we exchange the battery among different engines). The build is not terribly difficult, but younger children (e.g., 5 or 6 years old may need assistance).

This is a very good set, and it does come with everything you need (except for the AAA batteries), but it is still a tad spartan. Some additional track (#7896) and perhaps a set of points (switches, #7895) would be helpful. If your child or children already have a Lego city, then this will go beautifully with it and greatly enhance the whole build-and-play experience. As you can see, however, once you add the extra items, you start closing in on the price of the Cargo train (7939). But it is all good, and given the flexibility of Lego and kids' ability to remake the train into something else, it really is a fantastic toy.

For those of you who have earlier Lego train sets, this is a new generation that uses Power Function motors and infrared signaling. The prior "RC" sets (7897 and 7898) use a different motor and different infrared control unit. The prior 9 volt sets used electrified track. This newest generation has the same gauge track as the 9 volt, but the track is plastic (and is exactly the same track as the RC sets).

If you are interested in some of the extra items, Amazon sometimes carries some of them. I have only ever seen the rechargeable battery available directly from Lego. So check them out as well. And if you want to get more of a feel for the train (since many toy stores don't stock these -- they don't move as fast as, say, Star Wars Lego), search for "Lego 7938" on Youtube.

Lego Make and Create Holiday Train Reviews..

What Buyers are Saying on Amazon

We just got this Lego Holiday Train, with the 9V power conversion kit, and we are totally in love with it. Our two sons, ages 10 and 7, put it together without much parental help in about 4 hours of Lego-building fun.

In typical Lego fashion, it is very detailed: the gifts that ride in the open car are really cute and fun to assemble. The kids love the mini figures that come with it, and they really love manning the well-designed remote control. We all are impressed with how fast the train can move around the tracks without derailing.

We just ordered another box of straight tracks to better able the train to maneuver around our Christmas tree. We highly recommend the power kit to make this train even more magical. We expect the Lego Holiday Train will be a family tradition for years to come.

I had a lot of fun putting this little gem together even at my ripe old age of 58! It's very durable and lends itself to customizing quite readily. I've added more Lego mini-figs and more gifts to the already abundant supply provided. Just let you imagination run wide! I bought a motor, controller, and track and was delighted with the smooth operation. I collect HO scale trains which I enjoy immensely but this is so much more fun! ENJOY!
