Leicestershire- The Heart of England

Leicestershire is a county in the East Midlands of England. The capital is, of course, Leicester City, with a population of some 250,000 souls, located about 90 miles north of London.

Although not typically considered a tourist destination, Leicestershire has a lot to offer, and I will look at some of the highlights in this page.

Leicester City is home to a major university as well as a semi-pro football/soccer team. The city itself is culturally diverse, with a large segment of Hindu and Muslim residents and therefore temples and mosques as well as cathedrals.

I hope you will enjoy a brief introduction to this interesting segment of the British countryside, the region where I lived for nearly six months between late 2005-early 2006.

Local History

Leicester was a major Roman town until roughly 450 AD, and there are several sites in the area which attest to this, including the Jewry Wall, a portion of a Roman bath house, in Leicester city centre, as well as the High Cross, where the two major Roman routes across Britain intersected.

There are several castles and manor houses in the region, of which the best known are Ashby-de-la-Zouch Castle, a Yorkist site, and Kirby Muxloe, a fortified moated manor house.
