French Ice Cream De Luxe

Ice cream from the South of France or le Midi adds to the allure of le macaron on St. Armands Circle in Sarasota, Florida. Local lore says that John Ringling imagined St Armands as a European-style shopping area and shops like Decor de France fit that style.

At le macaron, we see Provence in the neon yellow color of the mango flavor French ice cream that yells, "Choose me!" but we go with chocolate. Very rich tasting, this treat fits well with the other offerings: handmade macarons and artisan chocolates.

Rosalie Guillem and her daughter, Audrey Guillem Saba, opened le macaron, a French pastry shop in May 2009. From Provence, the mother-daughter team brings a variety of European confections to our town. Le macaron also serves coffee and espresso to enjoy with French pastries at cafe tables inside or outside.

Several large photographs of macarons by Chris Gladdue illustrate the main attraction. A raspberry-painted wall and bright candy-colored chairs add to the confectionery decor.

We enjoy nibbling on macarons or petite madeleines and sipping coffee while we watch people stroll by on The Circle. Last time we noticed an enticing blue-colored macaron. As it turned out, the macaron was blackcurrant and delicious.

When my wife travels north to visit her family, she takes along exquisite boxes of the revered French pastry from le macaron.

Try the Norman Love Confections available locally at le macaron. You no longer need to drive to Ft. Myers for a tin of these coveted handmade chocolates.

A Portrait of Five Macarons

After the shoot came the nibble!

Five darling macarons nestled in a narrow white box and swaddled in raspberry-colored tissue. My wife and I oohed and aahed our way through this divine pastry handmade by le macaron. The orange macaron offered the biggest surprise, a burst of ctirus flavor tantalizing the mouth with Floridian flavor.

Next we shared the mocha macaron with chocolate filling. Yummy!

These sandwich-like pastries with a ganache in the middle come in a dizzying variety of flavors. Best of all, le macaron serves these delights at their pastry shop on St. Armands Circle.

As she gradually begins to adjust to her new life and surrounds herself with a few confidantes, Marie Antoinette finds solace in buying elaborate gowns and shoes, eating lavish pastries (produced for the film by Laduree, the renowned maker of luxury macarons), and gambling with her ladies.

Bow Wow Wow's most popular U.S. hit was the New Wave staple, "I Want Candy" (originally a 1965 hit by The Strangeloves). "I Want Candy" was featured in an early music video on MTV. Macarons at Starbucks & McCafe

Looks Like a Tiny Hamburger

"How can a massive chain such as Starbucks keep macarons - which go stale so very easily - fresh? The short answer is that they can't." --YumSugar

Made in France by Chateau Blanc "exclusively for Starbucks," the $9.95 gift box includes two pieces of each of the following flavors: coffee, pistachio, raspberry, vanilla, chocolate, and lemon.

As for McCafe? "I took a pistachio," wrote Mike Steinberger, author of Au Revoir to All That: Food, Wine, and the End of France and Slate wine columnist . "Not bad, I thought, but no Laduree. As if reading my mind, Petit immediately chimed in, 'We get the macarons from Holder, the company that owns Laduree.' Touche."

The result is one of the richest cups of java you'll ever taste. --Mary Park
