Lemmy - Motorhead frontman and bass guitarist
Lemmy is the frontman, vocalist and bass guitarist for the legendary British Heavy Metal band, Motorhead.
Lemmy's given name is Ian Fraser Kilmister, and he was born in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England in 1945.
Son of a vicar who left the family when Lemmy was three months old, Lemmy moved to London as a teenager and became a guitarist in long forgotten bands the Rainmakers, Rockin' Vicars and Opal Butterfly and worked as a roadie for guitar legend Jimi Hendrix and The Nice.
Lemmy joined psychedelic rock band Hawkwind in 1971, playing bass and occasionally singing. You can hear him on their 1972 classic "Silver Machine".
In 1975 Lemmy was sacked from the band when he got caught in possession of drugs at the Canadian border while on tour.
He then formed Motorhead, named after the last song he ever wrote for Hawkwind (and also British slang at the time for a speed freak), although Lemmy had wanted to call the band Bastard at first!
Lemmy is the only member of Motorhead to have been in the band consistently since it was formed in 1975.
Motorhead proved they can still cut it 30 years later, when, in 2005 they received a Grammy for Best Metal Performance with their cover of Metallica's "Whiplash", beating off acts including Slipknot, Hatebreed and Cradle of Filth to win.

Lemmy claims to have slept with over 2,000 women. Now some might find that sort of thing distasteful, but given that Lemmy isn't the best looking bloke in the world, he must have a "certain something"...perhaps it's his charm...perhaps it's his famous warts...but you've got to admire his stamina...
Lemmy sings with his microphone angled upwards. He says he does it that way for "personal comfort, that's all. It's also one way of avoiding seeing the audience. In the days when we only had ten people and a dog, it was a way of avoiding seeing that we only had ten people and a dog".
Lemmy appears in the 1994 comedy Airheads (in which he is credited as "Lemmy von Motörhead"). One scene has Brendan Fraser's character, "Chazz" Chester Darvey talking to an undercover cop who is pretending to be a record executive - Chazz asks him, "Who'd win in a wrestling match, Lemmy or God?", the cop replies, "Lemmy", to which Rex, played by Steve Buscemi, imitates a game show buzzer and the cop quickly changes his answer to "... God!". Rex replies saying, "Wrong, dickhead, trick question. Lemmy is God"...and who's to say it's not true...

He is best known as the founding member of the metal band Motörhead. His appearance, mutton chops (sideburn-moustache combination), and gravelly voice have made him an instantly recognisable cult figure.
