Lemonade Day

Lemonade Day Introduces Kids to Entrepreneurship

Lemonade Day, an annual event hosted in several U.S. cities, encourages kids to start a lemonade stand and help their community at the same time.

Lemonade store owners are loaned $20, which they promise to repay with interest. The budding entrepreneurs learn how to set goals, write a business plan and budget, find investors, and provide good customer service. They are encouraged to give back to the community in some way.

In its first year (2007), approximately 2,600 stands were set up in Houston. Since then it has grown to over 50,000 stands in that city, and to more than 30 cities across the U.S.

I learned about Lemonade Day through a story in my local newspaper. Scott Jones, an entrepreneur from Indianapolis,, has created a local foundation, Think Forward, to help back the program.

With this community event, schools, businesses, parents and kids all work together in a fun and educational way. Maybe your kids would like to participate next year! Read on to learn more.

Perfect Lemonade Recipe from Simply Recipes

Lemonade Stand

Simply Recipes

Ingredients

* 1 cup sugar (can reduce to 3/4 cup)
* 1 cup water (for the simple syrup)
* 1 cup lemon juice
* 3 to 4 cups cold water (to dilute)

Method

1 Make simple syrup by heating the sugar and water in a small saucepan until the sugar is dissolved completely.
2 While the sugar is dissolving, use a juicer to extract the juice from 4 to 6 lemons, enough for one cup of juice.
3 Add the juice and the sugar water to a pitcher. Add 3 to 4 cups of cold water, more or less to the desired strength. Refrigerate 30 to 40 minutes. If the lemonade is a little sweet for your taste, add a little more straight lemon juice to it.
Serve with ice, sliced lemons.

Serves 6.

Lemonade E-Commerce
For many of us, setting up a neighborhood lemonade stand was our introduction to entrepreneurship. It taught us life lessons in responsibility, self-reliance and hard work. In a similar way, lemonade inc. enables people to combine commerce and community in the digital neighborhood of their personal online space. We are proud to be on the forefront of Consumer Generated CommerceTM. Cost-free and easy to use, this is the next generation of the old-fashioned Lemonade Stand concept.

Add "The Lemonade War" book by Jacqueline Davies. Great 3rd/4th/5th grade book about just this topic - and it teaches kids about profits/losses/entrepreneurship too! Fabulous lens!

What a neat idea! My parents always encouraged my sisters and me to be entreprenurial, though I'm the only one that followed through on that to adulthood. I fully agree that kids should know how to run a business. Five stars and an angel blessing!
