L'enfant et les Sortileges

When I studied Costume in Ohio, for 2 months in 2002, I was introduced to the Childrens' Opera "L'enfant et les Sortileges" by Ravel.

This project was one that has since inspired a lot of my textiles work and the imagery and techniques that I use now.

Here is a collection of my designs for costumes, information about the opera and some of the inspiration behind my illustrations.

L'enfant et les Sortileges

By Maurice Ravel.

L'enfant et les Sortileges, also known as "The Enchanted Child" or "The Child and the Spells" is the story of a naughty boy who throws a tantrum and destroys his room. The destroyed objects come to life to punish him and are joined by the animals he has harmed in the past.

The story was originally conceived by Colette. Maurice Ravel set the story to music.

Mama

Costume Design.

I'd designed some costumes for the Tempest before this project. The Masque Goddesses- Juno, Ceres etc were all on stilts. This inspired my design for Mama too. I believe she's been portrayed as a giant pair of legs before so this triggered the idea to make her abnormally tall.

I wanted her apron and the bottom of her dress to look like her son had scribbled and splattered paint all over them, just like he's scribbled all over the rest of the characters.

Lolly Pops and Jelly Beans

My main sources of inspiration for this project were scribbling, the art of Hundertwasser and candy.

I found this lolly and the jelly beans after finding the artwork of Hundertwasser- his trees reminded me of lollies.

I love how this lolly pop swirls around, almost like a scribble.

The Arm Chair

Concept design.

The Arm Chair is a giant puppet that comes alive. He features scribbles for eyes and his mouth comes from under the cushion.

The Clock

Costume Design

This is the clock. His pendulum is a lolly to fit in with my candy theme.

The main body of this costume would consist of fabric hanging from the character's shoulders so that they weren't constricted by a bulky shape.

Frog

Puppet design.

The Frog was inspired by the artwork of Hundertwasser, and in particular his painting "Tender Dinghy" (shown below).

Frog is a puppet, featuring scribbles.

I was drawn to Hundertwasser's work by the bright colours and almost childlike imagery. If you look at my design for the frog you will see how the painting directly below inspired it.

Fire

Costume design.

Fire was designed to look like some sort of Chinese Dragon. I think if I redesigned this piece I'd design him to look a little bit more like the other characters.

Cinder

Costume design.

Cinder is covered in wispy smoky scribbles.

This costume would be a lot of fun to make- just think of all the gorgeous cobweb-like textukres you could make.

Sample for Cinder

Melted fabrics.

This was a sample for Cinder made from metallic voile.

Before I learnt about hot air guns I just used tea lights to melt through fabrics.

The Sleepy Princess

Costume design.

I wanted the Princess's hair to be one big hair piece that stuck out in those curls- perhaps it would have been more fun to have made her hair even more scribbly.

The Princess is a character, from one of the boy's storybooks, that comes to life.

More crayon doodles, bleached fabrics and some quilted silk painting.

The Shepherdess and Sheep

Costume design.

I love the idea of having a scribbly child's drawing of a sheep on the shepherdess's dress. Seeing as I used crayons in the designs it would have been fun to experiment with batik.

Doodles for the Shepherdess

More scribbles.

The Shepherds and Shepherdesses were characters on the little boy's wall paper that came to life.

Dragonfly

Costume design.

For the Dragonfly I was primarily interested in his cloak/wings. See the sample below.

Sample for Dragonfly

Sample for the Dragonfly's wings.

I thought about how I could make a scribbly piece that was also diaphanous. Here I've tried sewing "scribbles" of yarn onto the reverse of some blue organza.

Moth

Costume design.

Moth was one of my favourite designs. I imagined her to be covered in soft Rennie Mackintosh style scribbly roses.

I liked the idea that she looked like a cocoon when her wings were folded.

Moth Figurine

An Art Doll based on my design for the Moth.

As I loved the above costume design so much I decided to experiment with making my very first art doll, using the design as inspiration. As you can see, I did change her a little from the original design. I wanted to experiment with Queen Amidala hair pieces!

Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Inspiration for "Moth".

I looked at some of Rennie Mackintosh's drawings as inspiration for Moth. I still use a stylistic rose akin to Mackintosh's in my current textiles work.
