3rd Party Web Analytics for Lenses

Squidoo provides pretty good statistics about how many visitors come to your lens, and what they click on. There are some 3rd party analytics services that can give you a little bit more information, and they are easy to setup.

On this lens I have reviewed the best stats service I have found, and I show you how to set it up for your lenses.

If you prefer, you can use Google Analytics instead.

What is Clicky?

Clicky is a web analyzer that works great with any web site, even Squidoo. It was originally targeted towards smaller web sites and blogs because it tracks a high level of detail on every visitor, and these types of sites find this information very interesting. Since then, many additional features have been added to Clicky, such as the customizable dashboard full of Ajax love, and their amazing filtering interface that gives you actionable data on any subset of your visitors. These features, along with many others, make Clicky one of the best web analyzers on the planet.

How does it work?
Simply create an account and then add one or more web sites to that account. For each web site you register, you are given two lines of HTML code to place on your web site (this code is unique for each registered site). It's this code that let's them monitor all of your traffic and give you the juicy details you crave.

Adding Tracking Code To Lenses

To be able to count your visitors, you will need to put some tracking code on your lenses. You will be provided with this code once you've registered your site with a service.

Because Squidoo does not allow Javascript, you will need to use an image based tracker. This means you won't get all the information that the analytics service might usually provide, like traffic sources or keywords, but you can get that kind of info from Squidoo anyway. You'll find the 'Non-Javascript tracking code' at the bottom of the tracking code page.

The best place to put the tracking code is on your Lensmaster profile. It will then automatically appear on all lenses that use the default bio, and thereby collect the stats from them all. You'll have to manually paste this into the bios of lenses that don't.

The Clicky Dashboard

When you open your dashboard for your site, you'll see an overview of your visitors, actions (page views) and other metrics. The interface is clean and uncluttered.

Some of the boxes on your dashboard will be useless if you're using it to track your lenses. This is a limitation of the tracker used to collect data about visitors. You can customise your dashboard, and remove 'Traffic Sources', 'Links' and 'Sources'. You do this by clicking on 'Customise my dashboard' and dragging the boxes into the red outline on the right. Have a fiddle with it until you're happy with the layout. Personally I like to have the two graphs at the top.

One of the best reasons to use Clicky is that it'll let you see the total traffic to all your lenses in one place, with the chart of pageviews and visitor.

Selecting a Period

In the top right corner of the dashboard, there is a drop-down menu for the period you want to see: Today, Yesterday, Last 7 days, Last 30 days, etc. The traffic statistics you see in the dashboard will be for data collected during the selecting period.

By default, the summary is for today, which I find less than useful. Another annoyance (for me) is that the 'Last 7 days' includes Today, which makes the graphs dive at the end. I often choose a 'Custom date range' and shift the period back by one day.

Not that this is really a problem, as Clicky takes into account of current time of day, and shows you the data since the same time yesterday. You can turn the feature on/off in your preferences.

Check Your Top Content

Once you've picked the period you want, jump to the 'Content' tab. This will show you all your lenses, and how much traffic they've received during the selected period. The percentage on the right of each lens is how much the traffic has gone up or down compared to the previous period. For example, you can see which lenses are doing better or worse this week than the week before. I find this very useful.

Click on the percentage number for a given lens, and you will get a chart of the traffic for selected period for that lens. For the first time, you can visualise the traffic coming through your Lensmaster profile page. Nice.

Where Do Your Visitors Come From?

If you want to see where your visitors are coming from (countries, cities, etc), click on Locale. This is important if you plan to be promoting affiliate programs from non-US countries, for example: Amazon.co.uk. You'll want to be sure that you're getting enough traffic from your target countries to be worthwhile.

Compare Clicky Packages

When you signup, you get the Pro package for 14 days. Most of the extra features you get are not much use to a Lensmaster, so you won't really miss them after the trial period. The exception to this is the ability to block your own visits, which you can only get if you upgrade. For $29.99 per year, this is very nearly almost worth paying for, if you like your stats to be accurate.

The most basic upgrade also allows you to add 2 additional sites, removes the ads, remembers 6 months worth of data and can email reports to you. The additional sites could be useful if you want to get separate stats for different groups of lenses.
