Give the Gift of Squidoo

Ranked #3,263 in Squidoo Community, #261,802 overall | Donates to Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue of NorCal

What to give the person who knows everything?

Forget worrying about gifts for the person who has everything. What to give the person who knows everything?

Does your dad know everything about restoring old Corvettes? How about your friend who photographs dogs for a living. Or your sister who has the best meatball recipe ever. Have we got the gift for them.

Gift a Squidoo lens to a friend. Craft a brand new lens just for the lucky lady or fella, dedicated to the topic they're most excited about. Set it up with a title, an introduction, starter modules to fill out, and tailor it to what your friend knows.

Welcome to Lens Gifting.

How to gift a lens

Here's a quick walkthrough of how this works:

1. Start here.

2. Choose what kind of lens you want to create as a gift. A traditional lens? A SquidPaws lens? A Holiday Gift Guide lens?

3. Based on what you pick, you will go straight in to the builder for that lens. It will feel like any old lens you are building, but stick with it, this is a GIFT lens! Give it a good URL, because your friend won't be able to change this part later.

4. When you land in the Workshop of this new lens, you will see that this is indeed a Gift. There will be a big pink button that says SEND GIFT in place of the regular Publish button.

5. Here's the meat and potatoes of lens gifting. This is where you bring your genius and creativity to the gift you're building. It's time to set up the lens as much as you can. You're a Giant, you know all the smart tricks and secrets, use those on this lens for your friend. Include photos if you can, write a great title, and set up the modules and settings. Give your friend a really strong headstart.

5.5 Even better, write little notes in the modules for your friend. Let them know what they should add there.

6. Click SEND GIFT when you're ready, and enter your friend's info.

7. You'll be able to see all your pending gifts and claimed gifts at the bottom of your Lenses list on the dashboard. Once your friend claims the lens we'll send you an email, too, to let you know.

8. Your friend has 30 days to claim it! If your friend doesn't claim the lens within 30 days, we'll send you both a reminder note. If your friend still doesn't claim the gift, poof. The lens goes to the big farm in the sky for unwanted gifts.

Tips for making your gift great

Here are a few tips for a successful lens gift, not in any kind of order:
  • Most important, make sure the gift is on a topic you know your friend is really interested in! Focus the lens as specifically as you can on the topic your friend loves.
  • Add as much or as little to the lens as you want before you gift it. But the more of a headstart you give it, the more personalized it will look to your friend, and the harder for her to ignore.
  • Add photos.
  • Even better, add a picture of your friend, if you have one. It's pretty powerful to receive a 'monogrammed' gift, so to speak.
  • You're a Giant, you know what makes lenses great. Set up all the modules you think the lens needs.
  • Better yet, plant notes in each module for your friend. "Mom, this is where you should add photos of your dog!" or "Billy, this is where you can create a poll for people about their favorite kinds of Pinot Noir."
  • Set the royalty setting for your friend. If you want the lens to donate to a charity your friend likes, pick that setting, and make sure to tell your friend this is a gift lens that supports his favorite charity!
  • Write a great title for your friend, so she knows exactly what you have in mind. Don't just title the lens: "Flowers my mom likes" but rather, title it with something specific "Tips for Growing Sunflowers in Cold Regions" if that's her thing.
  • The biggest, best, smartest tip we have to offer you: You'll know when your friend claims the lens. Don't stop there! It's up to you to teach your friend how to make a gangbusters good lens. The better they do, the better you look.

    Have fun, professor

It's up to you to teach your friend how to make a gangbusters good lens.
The better they do, the better you look.

More Lens Gifting Notes

Just a smattering of extra notes that I thought you might want to know.

* You can send 1 lens gift or 99 or 200 lens gifts. But please don't spam your friends.

* Lens gifting is not a glorified transfer tool. You can still transfer existing lenses to friends, if you want. Lens gifting requires that you create a new lens via the lens gifting start page. This project is about requesting a specific lens that you wish your friend would add her own perspective and unique content to. It is the gift of a (pretty big) headstart. It's the gift of flattery. How many people wish you would publish what you know?

* Once you've created the gift lens, it's up to you to get your friend to take it over and make it great!

* You'll get an email when your friend successfully unwraps and accepts the gift. (You'll also get points, and perhaps even a trophy!).

* If your friend doesn't accept the gift within 30 days, you will both get a reminder email. If he still doesn't accept the gift, it will go POOF and expire. The lens does not revert to you, it gets deleted.

Who to gift a lens to?

Why, to your favorite people, of course!

Send a Lens Gift to someone you wish would publish about something really interesting.

For example, I'd love to have my dad write a lens about the old Ford Woody cars he restores. It's hard to just say: Hey dad, go make a page. But if I sent him a gift that is all titled and set up and even has a few pictures of him and his Woodies already on it... that's a lot easier for him to fill in the blanks and publish.

So, who do you want to gift a lens to?

Who would you gift a lens to?

And what would the lens title be?

I've just received a gifted lens, but cannot figure out how to claim it. Yes, I got an email with a link, but when I click the link, I'm taken to a lovely page that shows I have a gift, and a big green button that says, "claim your gift," but no claiming actually happens when I click the big green button. Any ideas what I'm missing?

I didn't indicate that a new lens I set up was a gift, but that's how it's showing up. How do I change that? Help? (It's part of a series of lenses, so I don't want to delete it and lose the consistency in titling.) Please and thanks!
  • NaturalWonder Jan 19, 2011 @ 11:08 am | delete
Ahhh -- nevermind! I figured it out! (Just hit the "Cancel Gift" link at the top.)

please help me to change my gift len back to my normal len.
  • NaturalWonder Jan 19, 2011 @ 11:09 am | delete
Hi worryfree -- just click on the "Cancel Gift" link at the top and it will revert back to a normal lens. (Can't remember if it said "Cancel the Gift" or "Cancel Gift" but you get the idea!)

I don't want to do the gift len but accidently I did. How can I change back?

This was very easy to do and loved to make a lens for a Etsy seller to showcase her shop items. It will at least get her started for sure and by doing it this way, she can see what I did instead of trying to explain everything in writing.

Fabulous! This helps a lot. I have been thinking about it, but haven't come up with the right idea yet.

Awesome idea! I can't participate yet, because I'm not a Giant Squid (yet!), but I think it's wonderful. I know it's a gift that I would love, even though I'm already on Squidoo. I'm going to start a list of "gift lenses to give" so that one day when I get the opportunity I can give some Gifts of Squidoo.

I do have a couple of people I'd like to do this for, but don't I have to know a bit of what they know to start a lens for them, or to use their pictures?
  • Ener-G Dec 9, 2010 @ 12:31 pm | delete
THIS IS BRILLIANT!!! So excited, in case you didn't notice!
  • LisaAuch Dec 9, 2010 @ 9:20 am | delete
awhhh.......I came to check it out but I need to be a giant first! ....ohhh! such a fun idea!

I love it! I've been wanting to create lenses for someone I know who opened a Squidoo account but didn't do much with it because they needed a little boost . . . as well as others who I believe would feel more comfortable if they had this kind of start.

I think I'm going to make my first gift lens for my husband who has been wanting to get started on Squidoo too, but just hasn't done it yet.

I do have a question, if these gift lenses are given to "new recruits" do they also count as referrals in our referred lensmasters list for a commission later on?
