What is Lens Soul?

Lens Soul is that certain je ne sais quoi that some lenses have - and others don't. OttoBlotto's Gifts for Chicken Lovers and Collectors is a great example. It's quirky, fun; it's not a "me too" lens; it has character. You feel there's something of Otto in the lens. You can sense his sense of fun.

For me there are two clear aspects to Lens Soul.

1) it presents information in a novel or innovative way; and

2) it reveals something of the author.

Home or Hotel Room?

Many hotel rooms lack something. They are function and have everything a traveller needs - but they don't feel the same as home. Many experiences travellers carry photos, maybe an iPod dock so they can have music - just little touches to personalise the room. Some hotels go further - and people go back to them year after year for their holidays.

The same is true of a lens. Is it merely functional like a Wikipedia article? Or does it show passion and individuality? Is it quirky, or cute? Does it show you care about it?

Why Lens Love Matters

The most succesful lenses - and the hardest to clone - are ones which have a loyal fan bases. People who will come back to the lens time after time. One of the key ingredients in that is lens soul - the ability of a lens to make people feel that it is a special place.

Most SEO lenses and material lack Lens Soul! Most of them are peas from a pod. Build links. Chose tags. Include live content. Subject closed. They also tend to assume that nobody else is trying to get their lens or web site to rank well, and they tend to concentrate entirely on search engines and ignore readers.
