My collection of helpful Squidoo Info From a Newbies veiw

I understand some of Squidoo, but there is much more. Instead of saving them on my computer for reference, I put them here to share with you what has helped me learn.
I hope this will help other newbies.

I will share how I discovered Squidoo and some odd tricks I learned. Also some affiliate stuff. How I prepare, things I am currently learning, and goals for my Squidoo future.

Since it it is an ongoing process there will be more added often. And please add your helpful lenses to the link plexo.

How I got started on Squidoo

Some of you may have had the same experience.

sun brooch pin sunglasses cheerWhen I had opted into a list for "working at home" info, I got an email about doing "rebates". I bought that course and signed up for Clickbank.(which is actually free) I love e-books, so clickback was the neatest thing.
As I was looking around their site, I saw nothing about "rebates" and sent them a note. Clickbank informed me that they not longer do the rebate thing and it's against their policy.

Well that's no big deal, then I don't have to send people back part of my commission, and I have discovered the affiliate world.

In the course I had bought was a list of places to put in ads and articles. Squidoo and some others were listed. I checked them all out and felt that Squidoo was the simplest and friendliest. Squidoo is more excepting of goofballs like me. Here you can be a rocket scientist or a regular person.

It's free and the money from traffic goes to charity. You can Get Started Here!

Lens reading musts, Good stuff.

Keep an eye open for free e-books on Squidoo.

Branding Yourself

There are some lens masters here that I see just about everywhere on the internet that I go to. They have a ton of helpful stuff out there and many have made some e-books. They are working the social system as hard as they can. It works! When I see their photo else where, especially when they add me as a friend, it's like knowing someone famous. The essence of social networking.

I'm more likely to buy something from these people over ones I haven't seen before.

Something I haven't done is use a great photo of myself for every avatar and bio that's I have out there.

The gurus say to have a photo of yourself with a big smile. Though I recognize logos and pets just fine too. It's just got to be the same one for everywhere.

Also the same name should be used everywhere also, so it can be easily found in Google.

Leave nice and helpful comments. There's an avatar I dread seeing out there because the person is so negative in comments. Basically be likeable, helpful and have a heart.

Found, a FREE Avitar/Photo shrinker for Forums

I've spent many hours trying to make a photo small enough to fit into the space allowed for avitars on some forums and have it still look like something.

Well I found this Photo shrinker the other day.

Just add your photo and the required sized the forum requires and there ya go!

How I prepare to make a lens

you can do it anyway you want

Even though I'm not the greatest speller and my usage needs help, I am still picky about my lenses. They may even get too long, but I want them to be useful and have lots of pics. It may be faster for me once I get the hang of it.

What I do is write down any idea for a lens that may come up, no matter where I am.
That's something everyone should do.

icanhazhotdog dog idea whipet

Each idea will get it's own piece of paper for info and pics that could go with it.

As I go about the day, I watch for photo ops that may be useful for certain lenses. I will also watch for articles and books. Lolcats also has lots of funnies that can be used for different subjects.

Ideas each get a folder on my desktop, so the items for each lens can be sorted into them.

Once I feel I have a good start I just start a lens. Because I am still learning about the modules, more stuff is added over time. Which is good since the lenses should have activity.

You can get ideas from stuff you love and know about. Stuff you collect or sell. Things that you bought to fix a problem and you have some information on it.

One thing I do is use doing a lens as a reason to finish a project. As I work on it, I can take photos and video then I have something helpful to add to the lens. I've been putting off the pond, so as soon as the weather gets decent we can work on that together.

Once you share your knowledge, you are releasing it, helping others and you will make space for more knowledge.

One interesting lens I found was on "alt tagging" your photos to help them to be found in Google search. So part of my process is loading photos on to Photobucket.

I'll add that lens below in the HTML featured lenses.

Then when I need one I have a space where I copy and paste the HTML down that I want and the website or photo info into it. Then I copy that and paste it into the module, save it, check it and change it if I need.

People love photos and art!

Since we have the technology I feel there should be video and moving special effects when ever possible.

A fun thing to do is make GIFs, which are a series of photos shown one after another to look like motion. Basically animation! It's not as hard as they look.
Some gifs are only a couple photos. They work because our mind naturally fills in the missing spots and so it still looks like motion.

Up on the side you can see some GIFS I made for my other lenses and one That I C Jackson made for everyone to use to help encourage people to join Squidoo.

Your banners can be put into your blogs, Myspace, sigs, or where ever.

GIFs are a ton of fun and easy to make.

Photobucket will let you store gifs there.

Here's the company I got my GIF maker from, Active GIF Creator. They are very nice and will help you quickly. I have no affiliate with them, it's just the GIF maker I got comfortable with.
You can use their trial version, but it will put "not registered" in each GIF.
Once you pay for it, there are no words except the ones you want.

There are many out there and some systems like Photoshop might already have it.

This one was complicated and took me 6 photos.

Here's a great way to ad pictures while making some money from your lenses

I just found about about these guys from another lensmaster. They have a great and easy system set up to make adding the links to your lens. Much like CJ's link system. That way you can add more choice and pretty pics. They have a ton to choose from.

More money to add to your Squidoo lenses

Besides the Amazon, cafe Press, eBay and other modules you can add to your lens, you can add links as an affiliate for other companies that match what your lens is about.

It adds extra info and spark to your lens.

Be sure to sign up for some for variety. I don't know all of them, but here's what I heard of so far:
so far:
Clickbank
Commission Junction
Shareasale
Linkshare
And you can make your own Cafepress page with your stuff.

Recently I found that I might not be placing the right HTML from CJ here on Squidoo and I could be loosing commissions. It was hard to get an answer from CJ, so I asked one of our Squidoo masters for help, he sent me a link to Captain Squid's tips on using CJ where there is some videos to help out with that. Be sure to check that stuff out, it helps a ton.

thefluffanutta also pointed me to his lens about a new Clickbank Module. That is so sweet!

When at your Dashboard check down the side. Squidoo puts helpful links there, and it's always changing.

Networking to Spread the Word

A big trend that Derek mentioned was coming, which I defiantly saw coming just from being in a networking company, is "building relationships".

Not pushing your product, but adding value, educate, newsletters, giving up stuff for free, basically hangin' and being you. Do stuff for others, like on Twitter where people "Re-tweet" other people's Tweets for them.

Make sure to use Twitter to build up relationships. There is a link below in the featured lens module to a lens about Twitter and all the other sites that help you use it.

Twitter only allows a few words in the bio, so you want to put key words about yourself so others that match can find you. Twellow has a place where you can add a big bio and so their search will help more people find you. You can use it to find people more specifically. I'm still working on that one.

One thing I believe in, is when they fallow me I will fallow them, and it should go both ways, like an etiquette thing. There's some guys on there that must have 14,000 or more followers, but they don't fallow anyone back. You're talking to the wall! I will clean that up with Twitter Karma and replace some of the big ones back in that are cool like SMP Films and Frank Kern.

There is so much more to Twitter than I first thought. Here's a blog that has a conference call every Sunday night Twitter Secrets blog Just subscribe to the news letter.

One thing you can do for your Twitter bio is put a link to a "me page" somewhere on a blog or something. A blog that has all your links to Squidoo and more about who you are and what you have to offer of value. This would help reduce time for bios you need to make on other sites as well.

Numbers, Numbers, Numbers!

Everyday, I find a new place to advertise or bookmark my lenses.

More networking fun!

Facebook has a huge friendly fallowing of Squidoo people and lots of clubs to put your lens into. it's fun to have those you see on here add you as a freind on Facebook, and even Twitter.

Of course it goes both ways, you should visit other people's lenses there also.

There's also bookmarking, such as Digg and Stumble-upon. Though I've heard Stumble-upon can be touchy. With things like Digg, you want to get into the commenting that is going on, so people check your profile. Careful what you say there as Digg comments or found in google search.

Be sure to put a Twitter update box in all your blogs and Myspace, if you tweet your updates.

There is a lot of new sites comming up between us Squidoo people, so we can help each other. It's much like a mastermind thing I heard where they get a mastermind group together and hold each other accountable to commenting and visiting each other's lenes and blogs. This help ranking and increases traffic because of the activity. Something we should all concider.

Warning

More on sites just for lenses where you can add you lenses so people can visit them. I lost track of one, and one wasn't very freindly and they left negative votes. Which really doesn't help. I had put a banner from my lens to there where it showed a negative. I don't think the voters realized that it shows just who voted. I expect that from Digg, but not in a community where we should be helping each other.

The idea of those kinds of places should be to help each other drive nice traffic, that's what they would want for thier lenses, so I don't know what was going on there. I certainly wouldn't do that to others.

So always moniter the places you sign up for.

On a better note

What comes around goes around, visit, be kind and have a blast making friends and networking.

Lens Ranking

I'll tell you what I have learned so far.

The lens ranking as far as Squidoo's goes, changes every day, because it turns over everyday and includes the activity in a 7 day period. I see so many people angry in SquidU because their ranking went down dramatically in a day. It's because that 7 days in the week before where was less traffic.

Another thing that helps lens ranking is Comments and Stars. Favoriting may help too?

Angel blessing help a great deal for a few days. So it's good to have a nice lens.

I see some lenses where people sell an affiliate product, but the lens doesn't include any of Squidoo's profit modules. I found that having a sale thru your lens on a module like Amazon or eBay helps ranking the most.

With the exception of something like my Cat Fame lens. I haven't sold anything on it. It's just a fun subject for people.(Someone can do a dog one!)

Also Click throughs are better than someone just clicking back or out in some other way. Check your stats and see what people are clicking on in your lens. Youtube and Flickr are top on mine.

Places That I am Getting Traffic From

For a long time I didn't know about how to find my stats, nor did I think it was important.

But tracking is very important because it lets you know when you have done something right.

When you go to your dashboard there is a choice for My Stats, then pick out which lens you want to check, then click on Traffic. There you will see a list of sites where people have clicked in from, keywords searched for and Click outs.

About 2 months ago when I found the lens that says to add Alt tags to my photos when ever possible because the photos show up in Google search was a good find.

When checking my stats, I could tell that some photos on Google led a person to buy some stuff thru my lens on Ebay. That was cool!

I also put some blogs on Myspace and got immediate traffic. In those blogs I used some of my new GIF banners.

Be sure to be on Facebook and Twitter. I'm getting some traffic from there too. One thing I learned from a Twitter guru is to make a Me Page some where to send Twitter people too. So I made one on Wordpress with a blog about myy stuff on the internet. That is a very powerful Blog community. I got traffic fast from there.

I do get some traffic form my email sigs also. Especially from thank you notes to people that have bought stuff from me on other sites that are similar to my lenses.

Since I'm crazy about videos, I have some on Youtube. I also made one with my Custom Breyer to bring traffic in from Youtube. You can add links in the discription of your videos.

Bookmarking sites are great. Just today I added 2 lenses to Stumbleupon and Delicious and got some traffic. Stumbleupon seems to be the most powerful of all the ones I am on.

Hope that helps!
