A Home Theater Room that Anyone can Create

Welcome to Our Home Theater!

I wrote this article this summer to show people how easy it is to create a home theater room.

My husband and I built this theater room together, but it was his artistic creativity and his believing in a dream that made it happen.

He was my best friend and I will love him always. Len passed away in October very suddenly and unexpectedly. I dedicate this website to his memory and for the dream we created together.

GET STARTED!

Between February and May of 2007, we built our home theater room, and we did it for under $5,000.00.

Here is an eBook that provides a comprehensive explanation of the step-by-step process of Home Theater Design. It addresses a full range of projects from simple, living room installations to a dedicated room.

Imagine having the experience of a big screen and a kick ass sound system. Once it's all done, you'll reap the rewards and enjoy a true home cinematic experience with all your family and friends for many years to come. Take it from me. It is way cool!!!

Now the question is... where to begin?

Decide where you are planning on setting up your home theatre? Are you going to dedicate one room specifically to your home theater? How is everything going to fit together? It helps to draw a diagram of the layout and where you plan on putting different elements, i.e. the screen, seating, components, speakers, etc.

We decided when we had our home built to set aside a room in the basement for a theater room. We asked to have the room built with no windows. That's not something that can always be done. However, having the room as dark as possible is important.

We drew a picture of how we wanted it laid out and made of list of the things we needed to shop for.

THEATER ROOM LIST
Projector
Screen
Receiver
cable box
DVD player - multi disc changer
DVD player - single/recorder
Speakers
Power Supply
Deco etc.
posters & frames
couch
theater seats
component cabinets
'balcony materials'

Whether you are technically knowledgeable or technically challenged, you need to do some basic research to ensure that you have the right system and best set up for your budget. A home theatre can get very costly, and by doing some planning and educating yourself you'll be more confident that you're making the right decisions about your purchases.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO PLAY YOUR VIDEO/AUDIO ON?

Now decide on the video display. It can be Plasma, LCD, Front projection, Rear Projection, DLP Television, etc. We chose front projection because you can get a much larger picture than any of the other avenues and it definitely creates a real theater feeling.

Next decide on your player, basic DVD, HD DVD, Blu-Ray--Single or multi disc player?

We chose HD DVD. We have one player that is a single DVD recorder and another that is a 400 disc changer. We did it that way so we could use the single player when we rented a movie or borrowed one from a friend.

We inserted our collection into the 400 disc changer. It is great! It has a folder that lists all the titles and where they are located. If it doesn't pick the title and info up automatically, it has an option to type it in using a keyboard.

The Ultimate Theater Experience

Front Projection Rules!

PROJECTOR:
Projectors provide the ultimate home theater experience. Nothing else comes as close to truly re-creating the viewing experience of a movie theater. Front-projection TV delivers all that and more - images bursting with cinematic detail and color across a larger-than-life screen measured in feet, not inches.

SPEAKERS MAKE THE EXPERIENCE ELECTRIFYING

Do you know what you're wanting in speakers?

We installed speakers at the back of the room in the wall when we built our home. It was easy doing it that way because we were able to run the wiring ourselves before the sheet rock was put in.

We opted for a 7:1 set up. Most DVD's are currently 5:1, but the blu-ray and hd dvds are coming out 7:1. We thought it would be better to have too many rather than not enough. We figured eventually everything will be 7:1, so we just got ahead of the game.

We found a really great buy on speakers on ebay, but there are lots of deals at places like Best Buy and Circuit City.

Don't let the sales people talk you into something you don't want or something that is more than you need. Do you home work and go prepared.

Audio for the home theater system needn't be any more complicated than a four piece starter set with three small speakers covering left, right, and center, and a sub-woofer for the bass. If possible, check out the audio quality of the speakers before you purchase them; that way, you can decide if the sound quality is what you had in mind. Take your time and visit several different stores before making your final choice.

To duplicate the cinema experience arrange speakers on the side and rear walls. Music recordings played with surround speakers are also more convincing with side-mounted surrounds.

Measuring Equipment and Furniture

What is your path getting to your room?

Our room was narrow, so we decided it would be best to have two rows of seating. We decided on a couch in the back and two theater seating recliners in the front.

We did have a funny thing happen to us after purchasing the couch for the 'balcony' space.

We did measure where it would go in the room and chose a black leather couch that would fit in the area we designated for it. We measured the length and width to make sure it would serve our needs. However, we did not measure how wide the door to the downstairs room was.

Home Theater Design

When shopping for furniture, make sure to measure the theater seating, chairs and/or couch. Not only do they have to fit in the room, they have to fit through the door.

The room entrance doors used in the basement were smaller than the ones used on the upper floors.

The couch came really close to not fitting in the door. In fact we came close to packing it up and taking it back, but we tried one last time, turning and twisting and praying, the couch finally went in with very minor damage to the door frame which was taken care of with a little touch up paint.

Room Layout

Not a Bad Seat in the House

Even with the screen placed as high as possible on the wall, the couch in back had limited viewing, so we built a platform for the couch.

The platform is made of four 2X8's for the frame and three 2X8's inside the frame for support. This was covered on four sides and the top with ¾" plywood.

The platform had to be assembled in the room it was being used, but we did all the measuring and cutting in the garage. Then took it down piece by piece and assembled it. We had no clue what we were doing, but it came out great. Anyone with any carpentry experience would have no problem at all.

At first it was going to be just a platform, then we decided to build a half wall in front. We painted it the same red as the existing walls and trimed it with white molding. We added a brass rail on top that I was lucky enough to get from a local restaurant that was closing.

My husband fabricated an awesome cup holder from an ornate wall shelf that we found. He topped it with black non skid paper, got plastic cup holders in the boat accessory section then drilled holes the size of the cup holders and inserted them.

Before the wall was built we carpeted the platform with the same carpet that's on the original floor. We just happened to have enough left from our initial carpet install. If that's not the case, I also suggest a fun print carpet, or contrasting carpet would be great too.

I thought covering the platform would be a lot harder than it was. It really went quickly. Since we aren't professional carpet layers, we smoothed out the carpet and placed small nails on the edges and under where the seating would be. It looks great!

THEATER COLLECTIBLES

Here is a pic of the "small poster wall". There is a ledge on that side of the room, so we used it for collectibles we aquired through various sources.

We found chandelier like sconce lights with gold accents at Home Depot. A gold mirror arrangement is centered on the wall and divided the posters. Small things can add depth to your decor.

You can also see the ceiling mounted projector.

Decorating

Decorating is the fun part

We decided to decorate our room in a wonderful gaudy Victorian deco, lots of red, black and gold, kind of on the scale of an old theater with velvet and tassels and big heavy fringe.

The walls are painted a rich deep red and the ceiling black.

We found a great deal on frames for the posters on ebay. One wall has the large size theater posters and the opposite wall has small 11x17 posters.

We wanted the frames to all match and we found we couldn't just get the large size poster frames just anywhere. They're an odd size. We found package deals on ebay and all of them matched.

When shopping for speaker stands we found they cost a lot more that we expected, and we wanted to spend our money on more interesting items. On average they were about $150.00 each and we needed at least four. So instead we purchased some 'pillar' looking plant stands, made of the white/off white plaster stuff at a discount pottery place for $25.00 each. We painted them gold. They fit right in to the décor and look great.

We got drapes to hang on either side of the screen; also on ebay. They were velveteen and long, so we cut them off and added some heavy fringe. As you can see, they look great! We brought it all together with some movie collectibles and other items.

COLLECTIBLES

We showcased lots of collectibles related to various movies that we have collected through the years. Here is a replica of the Maltese Falcon. It sits at the entrance of the room. Above it is a poster of "The Maltese Falcon" movie and an autographed picture of Humphrey Bogart. This is in our entry - before you go into the theater room.
