These are the lenses I nominated for Lens of the Day LOD

Ranked #1,891 in Squidoo Community, #181,555 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund

How to Nominate a Squidoo Lens for the LoD - Lens of the Day:

Sometimes when I have visited the lenses of other lensmasters I have come across some that are just jaw-dropping in their quality of information and illustration, and they inspire you to want to nominate the lens for the fame and glory of Squidoo Lens of the Day.

But it was always too hard, bumbling around trying to find out where and how to make the nomination, so the opportunity was lost. Then today I saw another one (about Atlantis) that really impressed me and I decided to do a little more digging than usual, and thanks to another lensmaster I found the links and made my very first Lod nomination!

It is my hope that on this lens you will not only find the link to the nominations form, but by seeing the lenses I nominate, you will also be inspired to get nominating yourself!

Here is where you nominate

.. and this is what the form page looks like:

You just click on this link to go to the Lens of the Day Nomination Form and paste the URL or Filename of the lens you want to promote, and in the section that asks: Why are you nominating this lens? just make a few notes about why you believe that this lens is outstanding from the rest of the lenses you have been visiting.

Below I'm going to start keeping a record of the ones I was delighted by enough to fill in this form.

I don't intend to do this often, only when a page really impresses me, so it will probably take some time for this page to have many lenses to view. It's funny, but when I went to pages I had bookmarked because they impressed me so much that I wanted to nominate them, I saw that most of them had ALREADY won the prestige of LoD, so I guess I must have good taste - lol!

Below here I'm also going to put a submission box where you can add links to lenses that you have nominated yourself, so feel free to share the love a bit more! And by the way, did you realize that you are also allowed to nominate YOUR OWN lenses for LoD?

My first nomination for LoD:

Well I suppose there is a criteria or checklist that LoD are supposed to meet or exceed, but I don't know what they are and the form doesn't give me any guidelines, so I'm just going to go by my own gut instinct and feeling about the lenses I visit and enjoy.

This page created by Megan Casey helps to outline some of the things we should look for, as well as explaining in detail what the LoD is all about.

My LoD Nominations:

1. Atlantis: Fact or Fiction

Is There Basis in Fact for the Existence of Atlantis?

I saw this lens, and although it is not necessarily a very long or complicated lens, I found it really informative, beautifully illustrated, and the content was intriguing, so it became my first nomination.

"The lost continent of Atlantis has haunted imaginations of mankind for more than two millennia.

Its location - even its existence - has been a subject of considerable controversy".

This lens was created by Oxfordian, and her lensmaster profile is also below:

Featured Lensmaster: oxfordian

You should visit her profile to see an amazing range of subjects presented in fascinating lenses.

LL Dorward has a BA in both history and creative writing and earned her MFA in creative writing in 2008, specializing in novel-length historical fiction. She is an Shakespearean scholar and has written numerous academic papers on Shakespeare's works as well as the Oxfordian theory of Shakespearean scholarship. Her MFA dissertation, "Whose Worth's Unknown," is a historical fiction novel based on Edward De Vere, the Seventeenth Earl of Oxford, as William Shakespeare.

2. Your Renaissance Year

How To Renew and Revitalize Your Life

I visited this lens a while back and was intrigued by the information on this lens. As we are all in the throes of our New year resolutions and goal planning, this lens resonated with me, and judging by the comments of visitors they also found the lens very helpful. It made me ponder what I was looking for in 2012.

"Do you feel it is time to make some important changes in your life? Is your heart speaking to you about longings that will no longer wait?

It's that time of the year, and that time in our lives, when we begin to reflect on how we wish to truly experience fullness of life. Please join me as I reveal how I am revitalizing my life and how you, too, can make this your best year ever. "

I hope you will join me on this journey of discovery and revitalization.
Here's to the pursuit of all that brings us fully alive!

3. How Granny Gets Her Groove Back

Motivational Thoughts on Writing by Grannysage

I found this lens inspiring, as we all sometimes become a bit jaded, or downright frustrated with our writing and lensbuilding attempts, or at life itself. This lens gives some great insights and quotes on getting out of a funk.

"This lens is for me. You can tag along if you want, but I wrote it as an inspiration to myself when I was in a low spot regarding making Squidoo lenses.

I can't say I had writer's block, because I have lots of ideas. I just lost my enthusiasm.
So come along with me as I describe some of the things that help me get my "groove" back (whatever that is, we'll figure out that as well.)"
Loading

Featured Lensmaster: grannysage

It is hard to pick only one of her lenses, but that is the one I nominated first.

My name is Diane Wallace, aka GrannySage. I consider myself to be a storyteller. I like to wrap inspirational messages inside little vignettes of my life or the lives of others.

I have a lot of interests, including music, writing, reading fantasy, metaphysics, wolves, cats, travel to interesting places, and much, much more. In Sept. 2011, my husband and I realized our dream of living full time in an RV. Expect to see some more lenses related to travel.

4. Helping Abandoned and Rescued Animals

The Animal Rescue Site provides food and care for rescued and abandoned animals living in shelters.

There are many animal care and animal product lenses in my various accounts, and I am an animal warrior when it comes to protecting animal welfare and helping secure the wellbeing of animals, so this lens struck a chord with me.

I've been clicking every day for months to help feed strays in shelters, thanks to the information and links that this very informative lens provided. It makes a difference to the lives of animals!

The Animal Rescue Site <= CLICK - Thank you!

"By a simple click of a mouse you can provide free food and care to abandoned and unwanted animals in 2011. All it takes is 3 simple steps:

1. You click daily at The Animal Rescue Site;
2. Sponsors pay for food and care;
3. Abandoned animals are fed and cared for.

The food and animal care is funded by website sponsors. It is then distributed to the various Fund for Animals shelters like the Petfinder Foundation and several other animal-care places which are supported by the GreaterGood.org foundation.

In 2010, visitor clicks helped fund the value of 72,173,621 bowls of food for animals in shelters, thanks to your clicks. Read on to find out how your clicks can go a long way to help abandoned and rescued animals!"

Featured Lensmaster: ajgodinho

You will find a ton of interesting lenses in this account:

"Hello, I'm AJ Godinho, Human Resources professional, Trader & Entrepreneur with a passion for healthy living and philanthropy.

At Squidoo I get a chance to write about my passions and interact with like-minded individuals while making an additional stream of income and supporting charitable organizations.

I love to live life one moment at a time, remain thankful in everything and by this truth "do unto others, as you'd have them do unto you". It sure has served me well."

5. High School Days...or Daze?

1958 - 1959 Woodville High School, Woodville SA...Growing Up and Out!?

This is a real blast from the past for us baby boomers, written in a wonderful style with wryness and humour - totally enjoyable trip down memory lane, and educational for today's kids!

I remember getting Home Ed classes, learning to wash clothes with blue rinse and starch, and how to hand sew some bookmarks (that we later traveled to an old people's home to give out to them) and the basic rudiments of cooking. Good thing too, because my mother never taught me these things.

And I also had my first 'secretarial' lessons on a typewriter, and the teacher made me remove my nail polish! But it was not until later as a teen in Secretarial College that I learned to touch type and write shorthand etc. *Memories*

" Well-ll-ll...some of us 'wannabes' had High aspirations...over and above the realms of possibility! (Meanwhile, back at school...)

'In Your Dreams' Target: Smooth transition from Primary School (or the first seven years of education in Australia in 'my day.'...the '50's) - to High School (the next three to five years...preparatory to further education as apprentices, or at University, or entering the workforce)."

6. Please... 'Really' Listen

This is a heart touching lens about communication and the calls of the desperate. This time of year Dec/Jan is a time when people experience more stress than usual, and quit their jobs, leave home, break marriages, et al, and a lens featuring the need for us all to LISTEN - that also has the professional tips so that we can actually be of help, is very timely.

"Many years ago, when I was one of a group of trainee telephone counsellors, we were first reminded that humans are born with two ears and one mouth - an indication maybe that we should listen twice as much as we talk?

And we learnt that communication is only 45% verbal, and 55% non-verbal.

A mind-blowing thought - as a Telephone Counsellor, we would lose 55% of possible communication with this stressed caller.

How then, would we possibly 'read' their problems over the phone - with no visuals to follow, no eyes to look deeply into, no frowns or tightened mouths, no gestures? On first awareness, it all seemed impossible.

How could you even begin to discover all you need to know to help and support in any way - via your ears only?"

7. 'Hanging Out' with My Wall Hangings

Wall hangings and quilting is such a popular craft, and this lens shows the work and enthusiasm of a home crafter - beautifully! It inspires the non-professional quilter and crafts people to 'have a go' because you might just end up with some wall hangings as lovely as these.

"My Wall Hangings
....are amongst my Most Favourite Things
This one is called 'Miracles'. Its message is pretty well symbolic of most things about me (but especially my sewing), and it suggests -

'The Difficult
...done Daily,
The Impossible
...performed Overnight,
But Miracles
...are by Appointment Only'"
Loading

Featured Lensmaster: cdcraftee

I've had some lovely communications with cdcraftee over the past 12 months, and really enjoy her wonderful lenses!

Well, I have found another two lenses by Christine that are both touching and inspirational, so that explains why there are three nominations, with only one lensmaster featured.

"Hi there! And welcome to my often woolly, sometimes tangled, but mostly sparkling corner of the world. I am Christine, writer of distinction (I wish!), reader extraordinaire, and creator of all knits, crochets and beading you will find in my vicinity. I look forward to introducing my 'treasures' to you."

8. The impact of technology on work- life balance

Does technology make us work longer or shorter hours?

I found that this was a very interesting and comprehensive lens about what I believe we all suffer from.... tech overload! Instead of creating more time for us, all the tech gadgets demand our attention every minute of the day. I think you will agree with what this lens says, and want to find some answers for yourself and your loved ones!

"How many of you feel now feel strangely insecure and cut off when your mobile is out of action or your internet connection goes down? How many of you habitually go to check emails first thing when you wake up? How many of you are so proficient at texting you can send messages without looking - and do so constantly throughout the day! ? How many eat meals at your computer?

How many families spend hours in separate rooms at the computer, (although, on the plus side, my son has just been commended for his excellent general knowledge, which given his tendency not to read books or watch TV actually must come from the 'building civilisations' type computer games he favours)."

Featured Lensmaster: Sherridan Hughes

"Sherridan Hughes is a chartered psychologist specialised in career assessment, analysis and counselling - a proven career catalyst. After previous lives in teaching, hospitality and leisure, Sherridan has been a career consultant for the last 23 years and has successfully helped literally thousands of people of all ages, occupational level, and educational and social background.

As a recognised expert, Sherridan is often quoted in the media (BBC News 24 and Radio4, The Times, Today's Businesswoman, Red Magazine etc) and she is one of the few career consultants recommended in the career bible, "What Color is Your Parachute?" Clients come from all over the country and indeed the world (most recently from Brussels, Switzerland, Botswana, South Africa, Barcelona and UAE)."

9. Old Fashioned Candy Secrets and Recipes

Recipes and Secrets for Making Old Fashioned Candy

What I love about this lens ... This is a really comprehensive guide to the recipes and cooking tips for making old fashioned candy... it encourages modern readers to 'have a go' at a traditional craft, and in these hard economy times it is a cost effective way to keep your sweet tooth happy (for the whole family) as well as spectacular but affordable gifts.

"If you love old fashioned candy, why not try making some yourself. These candymaking secrets, recipes and techniques come straight from the original antique candy cookbooks, back in the days when every neighborhood had its own candy store, and taffy pulls were family recreation.

Making hand-crafted old fashioned candy is an art, but it's very simple to learn. Everything you need to know is included on this page. Make it a holiday family activity and it might become a time-honored tradition."

Featured Lensmaster: Nancy Oram

I have just come across a couple of Nancy's lenses that have really inspired me to new creativity, and this particular lens I just nominated for LoD was just such a classic, well constructed recipe lens, with details instructions - enjoy!

"Creating an online income with quality content and products." Entrepreneur WAHM, small publisher, owner of VintageHomeArts.com (Vintage Patterns & Cookbooks), NotarySources.com (resources for Mobile Notaries and Loan Signing Agents). Giant Squid 100, Squid Angel, and proud publisher of several purple star lenses."

10. About Chocolate and Chocolates

What I love about this lens ... This lens is an interesting tour of information and facts about chocolate, while also showing how to feature commercial modules tastefully and in a relevant way. The lens is also a mini-site because it links to other lenses about chocolate, making it a one-stop-shop for all things Chocolate! I love chocolate, and with Valentines Day around the corner, it is an on trend topic as well.

What could be sweeter than chocolate? Don't we all, (or almost all), love chocolate and chocolates? It's our lust for chocolates that makes them such popular gifts, but did you ever stop to ask yourself, "What is chocolate?", or "Where does chocolate come from?", or "How is chocolate made?", or "Who makes chocolate?," or "What is the history of chocolate?".

There are many interesting lenses in this account, certainly worth visiting and seeing some more!

Les Trois Chenes is a stone farmhouse situated between Limoges and Angouleme, deep in the heart of rural France.

11. My Stuttering Life

I bet you didn't know I stutter

What I love about this lens ...
Wow! I had no idea Susanna stuttered. I have only had a couple of instances when due to exhaustion and deep tension I have struggled to make my tongue enunciate what I was trying to say, and it is quite unnerving when it happens out of the blue. I can only have the slightest clue what it would be like to experience all the time.

I enjoyed learning on this lens how Susanna has detailed the problems of stuttering, the triggers and the practical self help solutions and techniques that she have designed to overcome it. A very informative lens that would be of help to stutterers and help to make listeners more considerate and patient I hope.

Susanna, I just love the practical self help solutions and techniques you have designed for yourself to overcome it - Bravo, I take my hat off to you!

"G'day, my name is Susanna, and I stutter. I bet you didn't know that.

Not many people do. I've been faking clear speech for some time. It's not easy and takes fierce concentration. When I get home and kick off my shoes I relax and stutter away the evening with family and friends."

12. The Secret Life of Unicorns

Do you believe in unicorns?

What I love about this lens ...
This lens is a gorgeous and truly informative lens about the mythology around the Unicorn. I have always loved that horse symbol of everything magical and Renaissance, so this lens absolutely delighted me.

It is a great tool for educating the youth who are at risk of never even hearing about the creatures that delighted earlier generations in fairy tales read to us.

"Do you believe in unicorns?

The enchanting Unicorn has universal appeal as a symbol of all the magic, enchantment, and power of the Realm of Faerie. He is of the mysterious, magical world of dreams and reflects all which is pure, chaste and honourable. The death of a unicorn is the death of innocence.

But is the Unicorn from Asia, or is he European? How can you tell the difference?"

Featured Lensmaster: Susanna Duffy

I have learned so much from Susanna and her lenses, she is a great role model for new squids!

Both the nominated lenses above have been created by Susanna, so you will only see the one lensmaster feature here for them both:

"Susanna Duffy Writer, Radio Producer, Civil Celebrant, Public Speaker, Reconstructionist Cook and Virtual Personal Assistant. Inordinately fond of kitchen witchery, arm-chair travelling and historical detectives.

G'day from Australia, where I write on King Arthur, Mythology, Legendary Beasts and Ancient Rome. I like to experiment with ancient recipes too. You never know what's cooking in my kitchen."

13. Death and Dying - Dealing With The Restless Patient

Thisis a 'Must Read' even if the subject makes you uncomfortable:

What I love about this lens ...

This is such a compassionate and loving lens, that deals with the situation none of us want to or know how to deal with. The information and advice is so incredibly useful, and makes me feel like maybe even I could work it all out with help from this and her other lenses on this subject. Truly amazing work, by a loving daughter that I admire wholeheartedly.

"Final Update: Feb 15, 2012: Mom died this morning at 7:11am. Now, to those of you who follow my blog, you know that Mom, Dad and I are gambling folks so I found the time comforting.

She died very peacefully surrounded by Elizabeth (an excellent caregiver), brother Mike, friend Sharyn and myself. A sense of relief followed - relief that she's no longer struggling just to exist.

She will be missed greatly by all but I still have a very strong feeling that she's here with me. And, that's where she will remain. In my heart forever."

Featured Lensmaster: gottaloveit

She has created a series of lenses on this subject - very comprehensive help for anyone just beginning to work out what has to be done:

There is also a range of other great subjects created by this lensmaster of course!

"I spend most of my days caring for my adorable 95 year old Mom, Gertie. During down times (which are many....), I write here at Squidoo or on my blog Gerties Galavants.

I also try to keep up my other blog Good Movies for Senior Citizens where Mom rates movies in arthritic fingers up."

14. The Ultimate Clean House Schedule

Daily, weekly, and monthly chore charts for easier house cleaning - by Susanna Duffy

What I love about this lens ...
This is just such a brilliant lens by Susanna.... I have all the suggestions printed out on my fridge, even though I already used most of them, it was just so refreshing and helpful to see it all collected here.
With rheumatoid arthritis the chores become harder to do over the years, so being really organised with a cleaning schedule and only doing the cleaning work according to what REALLY needs to be done, and only WHEN it really needs to be done, and doing it WELL when you do invest time and effort into a task, is the key to my sanity and pain management.
This might not be everyone's favourite subject, but it is an essential one, and this lens is so very helpful its not a surprise it won a purple star

I'm surprised to see that this is the third lens by Susanna Duffy that I'm nominating, so obviously she just keeps on producing great lenses that I thoroughly enjoy reading! You can read her bio and lensmaster link above in #11 & 12 nomination section

"I hated to wake up and look around the house and see all the chores that I had to do. No matter what I did, they never seemed to get any better! Until one morning when I knuckled down and made a schedule. Let me share it with you."

Are you a nominator?

Don't be as shy as I have been! I started creating lenses in 2008 and yet it has taken me to 2012 before I finally plucked up the courage to think that my vote might carry any weight... your submission of a lens is simply a personal viewpoint that this lens resonated with you for some reason and all that you have to feel is that the lens is in some way "outstanding" from the rest of the lenses you have seen on that subject.

So tell us...
