Ranking Lensmasters

 

I have come up with a simple calculation of lensmaster ranking. It is an average number therefore it is merely an estimate and not an exact figure. It relies on the current lens rank which is somewhat inaccurate but all we have today. It is a way to average all the lenrank into one number. It should give someone a good idea of where they stand. It only has meaning relative to other lensmasters.

How to compute 

The formula is very simple. It does help if you can create a spreadsheet to help with the calculation but not necessary.

Here are the step:
  1. From your dashboard, count the number of lens within each 1000 ranking. For example, from 1-999, 1000-1999, 2000-2999 and so on...
  2. Multiply this number by the average weight factor. For example, for 1-999, the weight factor would be 500. For the range between 1000-1999, the weight factor would be 1500.
  3. Sum up all the numbers from the previous step.
  4. Divide the total by the total number of lens you have. I would ignore the newly created lens-the one that has not been ranked as yet. The final number should be between 500-89,500 assuming we have 90,000 lens.
  5. That's all there is to this. Your average rank is approximately what all your lens combined will give you.
    I did this for myself today (3/07/2007) and my averge is: 10,488 for a total of 84 lens.

What is the rationale? 

Why does this represent a good average?
This is a standard mathematical calculation to compute the average of a distribution of numbers.
In this case, the number of your lens that fall within each thousand rankings. I chose 1000 as the range because it is doable by hand. I could choose a range of 100 but then you will be computing all night and probably pull your hair out in the process.

Let's examine the extreme cases and see if it makes sense. The best you can do is to come up with a 500 ranking. If you only created 1 lens and it is ranked between 1 and 999, your avg. rank will be 1x500/1 = 500. The best anyone can do.
If you have the same one lens and it is ranked 89,999, your average ranking will be 1x89,500/1=89,500. This is the worst anyone can do.
That is the full range of rankings given the current 90,000 lens in Squidoo.
For most people, your avg. rank will fall somewhere in between the two extremes. The lower your number the better you are compared to your fellow lensmasters.
It is possible for two lensmasters to have the same average ranking. That is perfectly logical.
If the Squidoo ranking algorithm is reasonably implemented, you will expect to see a bell curve distribution of lensmasters rankings. That is there will be a small number of lensmasters with lower rankings and higher rankings and the vast majority will fall somewhere near the middle-45,000. If your number is above that, you are an above average lensmaster.
My 10,488 ranking is not bad at all.
Understand that this does NOT mean I am number 10,488 in the list of lensmasters.
There are considerably less number if lensmasters compared to the number of lens. What it does mean is that my caliber of lens is on average above 88% of all other lens.
That puts me at the top 12% of the population.

Expectations going forward 

After about one week of monitoring the avg. ranking, I have established a baseline for myself.
I believe my avg. ranking currently is approx. 14,000. As we proceed forward, with more lens being created every day, I would expect a slight rise in that number or within +/- 5% of the baseline. If my number goes up by 10%, I would suspect some major changes in the algorithm. If it goes up more than 20 percent, I would think there is a bug in the system. If it goes up over 50%, I think the rank system is broken. I would also expect other lensmasters to experience similar results. This is also a good way to keep tabs on Squidoo. Any drastic swings in ranking can be discounted.

An alternative measure of lensmaster's creativity is how many lens they have created made it to the top 100 lens listing. I would like to start a club for lensmasters "Top 100 Club".

Thanks for rating my Alexander Girard lens. The maths here works. However, I imagine that it was abandoned in order to encourage lensmasters to create more lenses. As you demonstrate, the less lenses you have, the higher the potential lensrank. This does not make good viral sense.
